Slanted Shell Baby Beanies – 3 Sizes – Free Crochet Pattern

April 4, 2016

If you are a regular here, you know how much I love the Slanted Shell stitch pattern. How could I resist creating these sweet little Slanted Shell Baby Beanies?

Materials:
     – Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Deborah Norville’s Everyday Soft in Baby Pink, Mist (a Light Gray) and Royal Blue
     – I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook
     – #18 Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends

Material Notes:
You will want to find a soft, acrylic or cotton yarn for babies.

With one skein, you should be able to make 3-5 hats. They only take a small amount.

Time Spent:
I had all sizes done in roughly the same amount of time – about 45 minutes.

Measurements:
The Newborn Size has a crown of 4.25″ in diameter, a circumference of nearly 13.5″ to fit a head size of 13″ – 14″, and is 5″ in length.

The 3-6 Month Size has a crown of 4.75″ in diameter, a circumference of nearly 15″ to fit a head size of 15″ – 16″, and is also 5″ in length.

The 6-12 Month Size has a crown of 5.25″ in diameter, a circumference of nearly 16.5″ to fit a head size of 17″ – 19″, and is 5.5″ in length.

*Stretch depends on your yarn brand selected. The Everyday Soft yarn has about an inch to an inch and a half, while a yarn such as Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn has about two inches worth.

Gauge:
With Everyday Soft and an I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook = 4″ x 4″:
Chain 19, DC in the 4th chain, and in each stitch across. (16 DC)
R2 – R8: Chain 2, turn. DC in the 2nd DC and in each DC across.
     Fasten Off.

Abbreviations:
     SC – Single Crochet
     DC – Double Crochet
RS – Right Side of Piece

Pattern Notes:
Join to the first stitch, not the beginning chain.

Beginning chain 2 in the crown does not count as a stitch.

Turning is only done through the slanted shell pattern. Watch for directions.

Patterns:

Newborn:
Chain 4. Join to form a ring. Chain 2. Work 9 DC into the 1st chain. Join. (9 DC)

I can’t get 30 dc in row 3 unless I count the ch 2. It says not to count chain but it looks like I have to. Can you help?

The chain does not count in the crown, and the stitch count is correct. I think you may just be missing a stitch in the instructions – probably one of the first two, or the last.

I’m currently having the same issue as Emily was. Starting in row 3 and then row 4 (which is where i am currently). After row 2 it states i should have 20 stitches, yes. Then i should have 30 by the end of row three. I must be missing something because I’m ending up with 29 or else i have to crochet 2 in the last stitch to get 20. And you mentioned not using the chain as a stitch which i am following. (Same goes for 4) when i do the math maybe i am missing something. Im doing the 6-12 months.

        This is what was written:
R3: Chain 2. Work 1 DC into the first two stitches, (2 DC into the next stitch, 1 DC into the next stitch) 9x, 1 DC into the last stitch. Join. (30 DC)

**if you add the stitch formula up is does equal 30, but if you add the stitches it takes up in that row it equals 21, and we only have 20 stitches to work with.**

R4: Chain 2. Work 1 DC into the first three stitches, (2 DC into the next stitch, 1 DC into each of the next 2 stitches) 9x, 1 DC into the last stitch. Join. (40 DC)

**if you add up the stitch formula it equals 40, but if you add the stitches it takes up in that row it equals 31 when we have 30 to work with.**

Thank you so much for the pattern and the assistance. I’m sorry if I’m just not seeing something right in front of my eyes. 🙂

I work my beginning increase split so it allows the seam to remain straight. The first stitch of the increase goes into the first stitch (so it should be on the left side of the chain 2), and the last stitch of the increase goes into the same as the first (it will be on the right side of the chain 2).

I think this should clarify things. I did check the pattern notes, and see I didn’t add this note there, so I will update.
