Vertical Garden Bobble Washcloths – Free Crochet Pattern

Anywho, in needing a bobble washcloth, this pattern was the first that crossed my mind, and so I went with it, and I really love the pattern with the fun pops of color, straight vertical rows, and even the added little bit from the border being worked from the wrong side.

The bobble pattern that is staggered to match the soap cozy/small gift bag will be in my new eBook, and I decided to share this one with you today 🙂

Really, this pattern is like 4-in-1 because when the yarn is carried behind to work the bobbles in a different color, the pattern is one way (because there is a little more bulk), and worked in one solid color, the pattern is another way, and with both versions, I have two sizes provided.

100 – 120 Yards each of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used Lily Sugar n Cream in Mod Green (CA) and Hot Green (CB), and Bernat Geometric in the Emerald Energy Ombre colorway
H8/5mm Crochet Hook
#18 Tapestry Needle
Opt. Jewelry Pliers which make it much easier to weave in your ends

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives: Bernat Handicrafter, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran, Rico Creative Cotton Aran, Crafter’s Secret Cotton Yarn (from Hobby Lobby) – I do not recommend their I Love This Cotton for washcloths

Time Spent:

In relation to the bobbles worked in a different color, I worked my small washcloth up in about an hour and a half, and the large one up in about an hour and 45 minutes.

The other version takes a little longer because there are more rows.

Measurements (with Border):

Small Colored Bobbles: 8″ Wide by 8.25″ Tall

Large Colored Bobbles: 8″ Wide by 10″ Tall

Small Solid Bobbles: 8″ Wide by 8″ Tall

Large Solid Bobbles: 8″ Wide by 10.25″ Tall

Gauge:

Not essential. 16 HDC by 10 Rows = 4” x 4”

Abbreviations:

SC – Single Crochet

How to Crochet a Bobble: All in the same stitch (Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops) 4x, yarn over, pull through all 5 loops

Pattern Notes:

Beginning chain 1 does not count as a stitch.

When working the washcloth with bobbles worked in a different color, you will need to carry Color B the entire time from the very first stitch worked into the beginning chain – meaning you will crochet over a strand of yarn the whole time. This is important to get a consistent tension, and size. You will not work over the other strand in the border.

Change yarn colors in the last yarn over the stitch.

The bobbles are worked from the wrong side. When working these rows, hold the yarn carried as close to you as possible (as opposed to held to the back) so it’s not seen from the right side.

Instructions are separated for Colored Bobble Washcloth and Solid Bobble Washcloth with the small instructions given, and the large instructions in parenthesis.

Patterns:

Colored Bobble Washcloths:

In CA, chain 30. Holding CB behind to work over, SC into the 2nd chain, and across. (29 SC)

R2: Chain 1, and turn. SC into the 1st 5 SC, (in CB Bobble into the next SC, in CA SC into the next 5 SC) 4x. (25 SC, 4 Bobbles)

R3: Chain 1, and turn. SC into the 1st SC, and each stitch across. (29 SC)

R4 – 23 (27): Repeat Row 2 + 3.

Border: In CB (and not working over other yarn strand), chain 1, and turn to wrong side. SC into the 1st 28 SC, 3 SC into the next SC for corner, evenly SC 22 (26) down the side, 3 SC into the next stitch for corner, SC 27 across the opposite end of the beginning foundation chain, 3 SC into the next stitch for corner, evenly SC 22 (26) up the side, SC into the 1st stitch, and join to the 1st SC.

Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Solid Bobble Washcloths:

Chain 30. SC into the 2nd chain, and each across. (29 SC)

R2: Chain 1, and turn. SC into the 1st 5 SC, (in CB Bobble into the next SC, in CA SC into the next 5 SC) 4x. (25 SC, 4 Bobbles)

R3: Chain 1, and turn. SC into the 1st SC, and each stitch across. (29 SC)

R4 – 27 (35): Repeat Row 2 + 3.

Border: Chain 1, and turn to wrong side. SC into the 1st 28 SC, 3 SC into the next SC for corner, evenly SC 26 (34) down the side, 3 SC into the next stitch for corner, SC 27 across the opposite end of the beginning foundation chain, 3 SC into the next stitch for corner, evenly SC 26 (34) up the side, SC into the 1st stitch, and join to the 1st SC.
