Ridge Rock Gansey Hat – Crochet Pattern Review – Annie’s Signature Designs

March 7, 2020

This is a crochet pattern review on the Ridge Rock Gansey Hat by Rohn Strong from the Fall 2019 Collection of Annie’s Signature Designs.

From the minute I saw this set, I fell IN LOVE with the shoulder cozy! The combination of the two colors paired with the textured horizontal lines, and cinched shoulder piece – YES!

The Ridge Rock Gansey Set from Annie’s Signature Designs Fall 2019 Collection.

Just look at this beauty!

Annie’s was kind enough to send the pattern to me for free in exchange for sharing it with you. My intention was to use I Love This Yarn from my stash, but when I went to do gauge, it was really far off! So far off that I went down to a lightweight (#3) yarn, and met gauge perfectly, AND the yarn still came out of my stash, so win-win!

Even though the shoulder cozy is what originally caught my eye, I was running a little short on time, and didn’t have enough yarn in my stash (of two colors needed), so I put the cozy on hold, and worked myself up one of the beanies. I love cables, so I was excited to try this one.

There is so much texture in this hat! It combines post stitches in the brim with alternating cables and the valleys you see next to them. It really is a fun, interesting combination, and was just as much fun to work up! And don’t even get me started on just how comfortable this hat is to wear – I just love the large brim!

This pattern is pretty easy to follow if you are comfortable with post stitches. I will say, the valley portions were something completely new to me, and took a little getting used to, but they create such a fun effect!

Materials I Used:

  • Less than One Skein of Baby Bee’s Sweet Delight in Overcast [Gray]
  • I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Ridge Rock Gansey Set, Paid Pattern from Annie’s Signature Designs

Material Notes:

The original pattern uses Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Yarn – a worsted weight (#4) yarn.

Time Spent:

I worked my hat up in a few seatings for a total of just under four hours.

Measurements:

I made the Small/Medium size to fit my 21.5″ head.

My brim measures 8.5″ wide by 3 3/8″ tall, while the body of my hat measures 8 7/8″ wide by 9″ tall (a little taller than original pattern).

Pattern Notes:

I have a few notes to help you in making your own Ridge Rock Gansey Hat!

The foundation states to join to the first double crochet. In doing so, it makes sense for the beginning chain 2 of the next round to work as a back post double crochet, but I’m not sure why there’s a skip to follow? I think it should be a front post double crochet around the same stitch joined to.

I also found a mistake in Round 1 of the body. I worked, and reworked this round a couple times, so here’s what I found:

  • It is missing a “sk next st” right before the first set of **
  • Following the pattern (with the previous point), it equals beginning 11 + 2 repeats + a final 12 stitches, and leaves 9 stitches left unworked so…
  • Omit “hdc in last 12”.

The ending of Round 19 should be “join in top of beg ch-2…” not chain 3.

What a super hat. It is funny but it almost looks like knitting. Thanks for joining in Ginx Woolly Linx for March.
