Sunflower Shawl – Free Crochet Pattern

August 25, 2018

I originally designed this for Happily Hooked Magazine, Issue 38, which featured floral designs.

I first worked up this sunflower motif back in 2015, but then it sat and sat not knowing what to do with it, until last year. I looked back at it, and thought, this flower could be so much more! I pulled out some yarn from my stash, got to whipping up, and joining sunflowers, and the Sunflower Shawl was born! Originally, I submitted this shawl to be part of an issue to feature triangle shawls, but was asked if it could be used in the floral design issue instead. Of course I said yes!

If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop or EyeLoveKnots Craftsy Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the views lost when you no longer need to return to the blog to for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! It helps fund supplies for new projects to share with you!

Materials:

  • 875 Yards of Lightweight #3 Yarn – I used Baby Bee’s Sweet Delight Yarn from Hobby Lobby in the Banana colorway (1.33 skeins) and the Chocolate colorway (1 skein)
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends

Time Spent:

Each flower takes just under 15 minutes to work up.

Measurements:

39” at Widest Point by 34.5” at Tallest Point

Gauge:

15 HDC by 11 Rows = 4” by 3½”  OR  Each Sunflower = 3”

Abbreviations:

  • DC – Double Crochet
  • SC – Single Crochet
  • HDC – Half Double Crochet

Pattern Notes:

Beginning chain does not count towards final stitch count.

In the Center, join to the first stitch, not the beginning chain. In the Petals, join to the second stitch to lesson the level change – I do so here with an invisible join.

When you join the second petal to a current flower, you will find this point connects to the bottom petal of the flower from the previous row. While you could join to the chain space of the previous rows flower, I suggest joining to the space in between the single crochet join of the previous flower.

I found it easiest to weave in my ends as I went along. I worked all the Centers for the row I was working on, and sewed in the ends, then worked all the Petals for that same row, and weaved in all my ends before moving onto the next row. This helped make the remaining ones more sturdy being completed, but it doesn’t effect the joining process if you choose not to.

Two things that could go wrong while working this because you might be distracted:

  1. You work only three double crochet’s instead of a full petal, and you’ve sewn in your ends. As a one time thing, it’s no big deal! Just work the join into the center stitch, and keep going.
  2. You join all of your petals to another sunflower while working around, and you’ve sewn in your ends. Carefully cut out the sunflower that is messed up, making sure not to cut through the joins as you are going to need those. Remake the sunflower as stated in the pattern, but if you join to a previous join, work it as a slip stitch instead of a single crochet.

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
