This is a free crochet pattern for how-to crochet an easy chain necklace.

In working up my How to Crochet a Chain tutorial, I wanted to include a couple of ideas you could do with a basic chain. I dug through my bead stash, and found an unopened variety pack of beads – perfect time to see what was in there!

Materials:
- Small Amount of #10 Crochet Cotton Thread – I used Artiste brand in Ivory Peach
- 2.35mm Crochet Hook
- 34 6-10mm Beads
- 18 Spacer Beads
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternative: Aunt Lydia’s Classic #10 Crochet Thread.

Beads: My beads came from a variety pack I bought from FireMountainGems, and it contained all acrylic beads in a range from 2 – 45mm. I just sorted through them, and pulled out the ones I wanted to use.
You may want to string on a few more beads just in case you need to work a few more repeats to add length so it fits you the way you’d like.

Regarding Bead Holes: The holes on my beads were large enough that I was able to thread them right on, but if the holes on your beads aren’t, you can 1.) use a beading needle (sometimes a thin-eyed quilting needle works too), or 2.) switch to a hook that has a point small enough to insert right into the bead hole. For the second method, remove your working hook, pick up smaller hook and insert it right into the center of the bead, then pick the loop up on this same hook, and pull it through the bead. Return to your original hook, and continue working.
Pattern Notes:
Photo tutorials available for How to Make a Slip Knot and How to Crochet a Chain.
Pattern:
String on 45 beads – I did so as gold spacer, (orange bead, blue bead, gold spacer). Chain 5, chain over a bead, (chain 10, chain over a bead) 12x, chain 5. Slip stitch join to first first chain. (13 Beads)
R2: (Chain 10, chain over a bead) 15x, chain 10. Slip stitch join to the first chain. (15 Beads)
R3: Chain 5, chain over a bead, (chain 10, chain over a bead) 17x, chain 5. Slip stitch join to the first chain. (18 Beads)
Fasten off. Tie a square knot 3 times, then trim near knot (but not too close as you don’t want to give it an opportunity to slip out).
How to:

String on 45 beads – I did so as gold spacer, (orange bead, blue bead, gold spacer).
Push all the beads towards the working yarn a little to give yourself some space. Make a slip knot, and chain 5.

Push the first bead closest to you up against the last stitch worked…

…Yarn Over…

… leaving the mouth of your hook where it is, pull up on the loop that is currently on your hook so it matches the height of your bead…

… pull through to complete the chain.

Here’s what your chain looks like (what you see is the top of the foundation chain).

Another view with a larger bead.
(chain 10, chain over a bead) 12x, chain 5.

Position your strand as if to create a circle trying your best to make sure all the chains are facing the same direction, and not twisted. Twisted chain means your finished strand could twist while worn.

Take note to the first chain.

Insert your hook into the first chain, yarn over…

… and pull through both loops currently on the hook…

This completes a slip stitch join.
You can carefully put this on to make sure it fits you the way you’d like. If you want it to be longer, work some more repeats before joining.
Round 2:

(Chain 10, chain over a bead) 15x, chain 10, then lay out your necklace in position…

… and slip stitch join to the first chain – the same way as before.
Round 3:

Chain 5, chain over a bead, (chain 10, chain over a bead) 17x, chain 5, then lay out your necklace in position…

… and slip stitch join to the first chain – the same way as before.

Fasten off working yarn, and pull up on the loop to break it.

With the beginning tail end, and tail end you just cut, make a square knot three times. Trim thread near knot, but not too close as you don’t want the knot to slip out.

This is so cute!! I just got a ton of thread from my mom so I’m going to try this. I have so many beads I need to use up. Great idea!!
A great project for busting through that bead stash. Would love to see yours if you get a chance to make one π
That is so pretty!
Thanks, Joanne!
Really fun and creative! I

Thanks so much, Mireille!
This is my kind of necklace – love it! I’m sharing this with my daughter who is an avid crocheter with hints about her mother’s upcoming birthday. LOL Pinned π
I probably missed your birthday – Happy [late] Birthday, Marie!! If you didn’t get one from your daughter, I would be happy to make you one!
Such a cute necklace – I like the beads you picked, they look beautiful and while this looks like it takes a lot of skill to make the end result is worth it, it’s so pretty! π
Thanks so much for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup!
Normally, my need for a specific pattern wouldn’t allow for the random beads, though I guess the set pattern of color helped ease that. I really enjoyed working up this necklace, and I promise, it’s an easy beginner crochet project if you’re interest π
I love this! Pinning!
Thank you for sharing with Creative Compulsions!

Very pretty and a great tutorial! You made it look so easy to make. #HomeMattersParty
It is easy! Promise π
What a real crafty idea. I don’t have any beads, and never think to buy any. But, should I ever get my hands on some, I will try making some jewelry with them.
Yes! Next you are out and about in the craft store (when we all can be again), check the clearance area. It’s so fun!
