Meadow Tie Top – Crochet Pattern Review – Taylor Lynn Crochets

June 27, 2020

This is a crochet pattern review of the Meadow Tie Bralette by Taylor of Taylor Lynn Crochet.

I pattern tested this last year. With my wedding around the corner (back then), I got sidetracked with sharing the review – until now!

Can I also add how excited I am about my title photo?! Guys, background remover is a game changer! I still have much to learn, and while I am trying to improve my photography now, this photo is from a year ago. I am pretty impressed here with a simple, affordable program – Canva.

This is the “before” photo – what?!

There were some bugs to work out in the testing process, and then it turned into a beautiful little top with a fun ribbed effect. I wish I would have used a cotton blend, like my favorite Berroco’s Modern Cotton, instead of 100% cotton because of the stretch factor, but all the more reason to work up another!

Materials I Used:

  • 350 Yards (1.75 skeins) of Lily Sugar n Cream in the Ecru colorway
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Jewelry Pliers
  • Meadow Tie Bralette, Free Crochet Pattern from Taylor Lynn Crochet

Material Notes:

Let’s talk yarn… cotton yarn, by nature, grows (or stretches) out of shape, and there’s nothing you can do about it alone. It needs another fiber blended with it so that it can bounce back to shape – something like acrylic, nylon or wool so I definitely do not recommend a 100% cotton yarn for this top. Instead, I would recommend Berroco Modern Cotton, or even Lion Brand Coboo if you can meet gauge (it’s a lightweight yarn).

Weaving in ends of a tough yarn, like cotton yarn, can be hard on the fingers. Sore thumbs and frustration can be a thing of the past by simply using jewelry pliers to [carefully] help pull the tapestry needle through the work.

Measurements:

There aren’t any measurements provided with the original pattern, just letter sizes. For reference, I am a 39″ bust, and worked the size Large, but it proved to be a touch small, and I added to my top to make it work, so I should have worked the size Extra Large. This does not fit standard sizing, so size one up.

Gauge:

Make sure you are taking your gauge off an unstretched piece of fabric, or the finished top will not be the correct size.

  • Original Pattern: 14 sts x 10 rows HDC BLO = 4″
  • Mine: 16 HDC = 4″

Pattern Notes:

Originally when I made this top, gauge was an issue. I haven’t worked another since final edits have been made, but back then I used guess and check to get my top to fit correctly. I originally worked a foundation chain of 153, and then joined to the 20th stitch in Row 2 (this later proved to be a touch small, but I adjusted it to fit, and will share more below “for my closing…”

When beginning Row 2 of the body, make sure you are working from the wrong side so the fabric stays consistent.

I worked my straps wider just because I like wider straps to cover bra straps, but I also worked them in the back loop just to copy the rest of the pattern.

For my closing, my piece was not quite as wide as I needed it to be, so I worked four rows of single crochets along both edges, and then overlapped these edges…

…surface slip stitched them together to create a raised flap.

I planned on sewing the buttons onto this flap – in my case, they would be decorative instead of functional, but as of right now, I don’t know if I will add them or not.

That is such an adorable top, Alexandra. And, it looks so cute on you! I love it so much. One of these days I am going to get up the courage to try and follow one of these patterns. I don’t know why I’m so chicken to try, but I’m easily intimidated by crochet patterns!

I thought so too – that background remover is a big game changer! I am happy to help in any way that I can to try to make following a crochet pattern a little bit easier for you.

Okay, I did have one little moment when I thought “no photo is worth standing quite that close to the edge for”, and then I scrolled down. Thanks for joining in Ginx Woolly Linx Party for July.
