Colorful Nesting Cubes – Plastic Canvas Inspiration – Joan Green

June 3, 2016

Plastic canvas was my first love. Early on, I purchased the book, Plastic Canvas Toddler Learning Toys by Joan Green on eBay – wonderful place to get older leaflets and a big variety. While going through one of my WIPS bins recently, I came across these Colorful Nesting Cubes I remember working up about six years ago.

Usually I have pattern reviews for you, but this pattern was done so long ago that I don’t have any notes on it from then. This will just be a little inspiration, plus I have the booklet up for sale – Vintage Plastic Canvas Toddler Learning Toys – in my EyeLoveKnots Etsy shop!

I also found Joan Green‘s site. If you are a Plastic Canvas Lover like me, make sure to stop by and support her! She has lots of wonderful and creative designs available for purchase.

Materials I Used:
     – Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in White, Black, Yellow, Red, Dark Green, Orange, Royal Blue, Violet
     – Tapestry Needle – I like to use #18 or #20
     – 7 Mesh Clear, Stiff Plastic Canvas (Hobby Lobby)
     – Red and White EcoFelt
     – Hot Glue Gun and Sticks

Material Notes:
My favorite yarns to use for plastic canvas patterns are Red Heart Super Saver, Bernat’s Super Value, Hobby Lobby’s Crafters Secret, and Caron’s One Pound – they are durable, thicker, easily washable, and with the quantities included, they are very economical buys.

Plastic canvas comes in a soft mesh, and stiff. I recommend the stiff for a project like this so the sides don’t wobble or fall out of shape.

Pattern Notes:

I did change the pattern on the larger cube – I worked a diagonal black and white print, instead of white with black dots. I freehanded this.

I would recommend if attempting a project like this to glue on the felt before assembly. The pattern states to do it after, but that was difficult. Just make sure to leave room at the ends to allow for the whipstitching.

Hope you enjoyed this plastic canvas inspiration! Have you attempted plastic canvas projects? What are your favorite type to work?

I would love to see your creations! Please share your photos on my EyeLoveKnots Facebook page, or our latest Yarn Fanatic Party Link Up!
