Sunflower Afghan Square – Free Crochet Pattern

Gauge:
With I Love This Yarn and an I9/5.5mm Hook = 4″ x 4″
     Chain 16, DC in the 4th stitch, and in each stitch across. (14 DC)
     R2 – R8: Chain 2, turn. DC in the 2nd stitch, and each stitch across.
     Fasten Off.

Abbreviations:
     SC – Single Crochet
     HDC – Half Double Crochet
     DC – Double Crochet
     FPDC – Front Post Double Crochet

Pattern Notes:
     Joining will be done to the first stitch, unless otherwise noted.

     I have a photo tutorial for the Invisible Join available in my Newborn Twin Chunky Hats post. I used the invisible join in the joining of Round 3, Round 4 and the final round – as marked. The other color change from Round 7 to 8, I changed colors in the last yarn over of the final stitch.

     In Round 7, the { … } indicate the repeat, and the ( … ) / [ … ] indicate individual steps of the repeat.

Pattern:
    Beginning with Brown, Chain 4. Join to form a ring. Chain 1, work 8 HDC in the ring. Join. (8 HDC)

R2: Chain 1. HDC in the first HDC, 2 HDC in each of the next 7 HDCs, HDC in the next/first HDC. Join. (16 HDC)

R3: Chain 1. HDC in the first 2 HDCs, (2 HDC in the next HDC, HDC in the next HDC) 7x, HDC in the next/first HDC. [Invisible] Join. (24)

R4: Join Yellow yarn in the front loop of any stitch. Chain 1, SC in the 1st HDC, skip 2 HDCs, (3 DC in the next HDC, chain 3, 3 DC in the same HDC), skip 2 HDCs, [SC in the next HDC, skip 2 HDCs, (3 DC in the next HDC, chain 3, 3 DC in the same HDC), skip 2 HDCs] 3x. [Invisible] Join. (24 DCs, 4 SCs)

R5: Join White yarn in the back loop of the same HDC as one of the petals from Round 4 (on the brown part). Chain 5 (Counts as a DC and Chain 3), [2 DC in the same stitch, HDC in the next 2 HDCs, SC in the next HDC, HDC in the next 2 HDCs, 2 DC in the next HDC, chain 3] 3x, 2 DC in the same stitch, HDC in the next 2 HDCs, SC in the next HDC, HDC in the next 2 HDCs, DC in the next/first chain space. Join to the 3rd chain of the beginning chain. (36 stitches)

R6: Chain 5 (counts as a DC and Chain 3), [2 DC in the same chain space, chain 1, skip 1 stitch, (DC in the next stitch, chain 1, skip 1 stitch) 4x, 2 DC in the next chain space, chain 3] 3x, 2 DC in the same chain space, chain 1, skip 1 stitch, (DC in the next stitch, chain 1, skip 1 stitch) 4x, DC in the next/first chain space. Join to the 3rd chain of the beginning chain). (32 DC, 20 chain 1 spaces)

R7 (Corner process shown above, and read left to right, top to bottom): Chain 4 (counts as a DC and Chain 2), {[yo 3x (4 loops on hook), in one motion, insert hook from behind through the chain space and then insert hook from the front through the corner chain space of Round 4 and reinsert hook into the chain space of the current round, yarn over, pull through, (yo, pull through 2 loops on hook) 4x – corner created], chain 2, (FPDC around the next post, DC in the next chain space) 7x, FPDC around the next post), chain 2} 3x, create final corner, chain 2, (FPDC around the next post, DC in the next chain space) 7x, FPDC around the next post). Join to the 2nd chain of the beginning chain. (64 stitches)

R8: With Yellow, Chain 1. [2 HDC in the next chain space, chain 1, DC in the stitch formed in the corner, chain 1, 2 HDC in the next chain 2 space, (FPDC around the next post, DC in the next DC) 7x, FPDC around the next post] 4x. [Invisible] Join to the first HDC. (76 stitches, 8 chain 1 spaces)

Weave in Ends.

Final Notes:
     The final stitch count including chain spaces is 84. There isn’t any room to add a final round of single crochet if your final square does not equal 6″ if you’re following along with the Mystery Lapghan Crochet-a-Long because the final stitch counts for each square need to be between 80 and 88 stitches. Instead, I suggest trying the final round replacing half double crochets with double crochets, and double crochets with half triple crochets. 
If your final square is larger than 6″, you could reverse this by working final round replacing half double crochets with single crochets, and double crochets with half double crochets.

Keep in mind going up or down a hook size (or two) is also a good alternative.
