I made this blanket for Todd for Valentine’s Day this year. He has been wanting one of those arm knit blankets for about two years now, and I haven’t made him one because of the crazy cost in yarn, and inconvenience in having to order online, but just before Valentine’s Day, I found myself browsing around Michael’s, and I came across jumbo weight yarn – woo!

The wool jumbo weight yarn looked really icky, so I actually purchased one of these Wild Child by Loops & Threads first. Here’s a blooper photo – Shiloh supervising.
When I got the Wild Child home, I started arm knitting with it to see how much one worked up – 1.) I hate arm knitting; 2.) BOY would I need A LOT! But for my love, it was worth it. I went back to Michaels to get the rest that I needed, and they didn’t have enough in stock. It really worked out better though because this particular yarn says “dry clean only”, and I am not about that!
I found some Bernat Big Blanket yarn, which was still jumbo weight, and really soft, PLUS I have read sooo many wonderful things about Bernat Blanket Yarn, so I bought it! They didn’t have much in stock (an ongoing issue), so I really had to play with my colors. Normally, I would make my rows even, colorwise, but I didn’t really have enough yarn to leave some out, so the color changes were a little odd.

I hid this yarn and WIP in a large box we had at home, so Todd wouldn’t notice (hehe), and when it was finished, I wrapped it up in the same box, and made him a sweet little Valentine’s card!
He LOVED the blanket! And used it when we had some really cold Winter weather, but the only thing is that he is around 6 foot tall (which is 72″), and the blanket came out a little shorter than I would have liked to properly cover him (measuring only 53″). If I had had more time (since I was short, and the yarn was hard to come by), I would have added two more balls of yarn. As is, it’s a good couch blanket.

Materials:
- 320 Yards of Jumbo (#7) Weight Yarn – I used 10 Skeins of Bernat Blanket Big Yarn, 6 in the Pale Gray colorway, 2 in the Vintage colorway, and 2 in the Gray colorway
- US50/25mm Crochet Hook
Material Notes:
I think as a yarn alternative, you could use two strands of the regular Bernat Blanket Yarn held together.

Usually, I use a smaller crochet hook to weave in my ends on bulky yarns, but with this one, I found it the easiest to just use my fingers.

Tips for Working with Jumbo Weight Yarn:
I normally hold the tension of my yarn a very specific way, but with the jumbo weight yarn, I find it best to switch it up, and the way I yarn over, for ease of stitching and less stress on my hand. If you’re having a tough time working with the jumbo weight yarn, try these tips:
- Hold the yarn in your tension hand more like the common way they show in the books – with the yarn strand held under your pinky, ring finger and middle finger and swooped over your index finger. While you’re holding the strand under the 3 fingers, you can release the tension to grab ahold of the fabric and hold the tension of the yarn against the fabric.
- When you’re ready to work your final yarn over, release the fabric from your tension hand and then do the yarn over, regrab your fabric and finish the stitch – it is so much less stress on the inside of your tension hand this way.
- Take lots of breaks – this yarn is hard on the hand that holds the tension, and the movement with the huge crochet hook is hard on your wrist of the hand that holds your hook and your forearm, so make sure you stop more often to take a break and rest your hands and arms.
Time Spent:
I worked this blanket up in a few seatings for a total of just over 3 hours.
Measurements:
47″ Wide by 53″ Tall
Abbreviation (US Term):
- SC – Single Crochet
Pattern:
Chain 36. SC into the 2nd chain, and each across. (35 SC)
Rows 2 – 37: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, and each across.
Fasten Off. Weave in all ends.

Was trying to go for something that kind of matched our [mismatched] home. Have been trying to be more consistent though.
Looks so cozy! So funny about the blanket ending up short for him, the same thing happened with my husband, and even though that was years ago he still jokes about it…..I have since crocheted him a much larger blanket and made him a quilt fleece blanket, so I more than made up for that first one! Thanks so much for sharing on craft schooling Sunday!
Hehe. Happens to the best of us!
Todd asked if I could just add onto the blanket, and I told him yes (even though the colors will be way out of order, #crochetersstruggles), so when my local Michael’s restocks, I will purchase a couple more balls, though now that I see “quilt fleece blanket”, I really like the sound of that! Hmm…
It looks so comfortable, I want to try out that yarn too. Thank you for sharing at The Really Crafty Link Party. Pinned.
It is a really fun yarn to try π It’s sold exclusively at Michaels.
