Birthday Candy Gift Jar with Balloon Gift Tag

Every month, a group of bloggers are challenged by C’mon Get Crafty to create a new craft or project from their own stash of goodies! Everyone is allowed a $10 allowance for necessities to complete their project (i.e. paint brushes, glue, etc), but the bulk of it must be created from their own stash of goodies.

This month I am sharing a quick and easy gift idea. I put these together for my cousins this year, and thought it was a cute little idea. I had trouble deciding whether to put the first letter of their name on the gift tag, or the balloon motif, but the motif has been on my list for a while now.

I had everything on hand for this project, except the candy jars, but I picked those up at my local Dollar Tree for only a $2.13 investment.

Materials:

  • Small Jar – Specifically, I used this Candy Jars with Ribbed Accents I found at my local Dollar Tree
  • Candy – I filled each one with 7 snack size bars, and 6 peanut butter cups
  • Small Amount of Aunt Lydia’s Classic #10 Cotton Crochet Thread
  • 2.35mm Crochet Hook
  • Crochet Balloons Applique, Free Crochet Pattern from Petals to Picots
  • Small Amount of Cardstock, or a 3.25″ tall by 1.38″ wide tag
  • Hot Glue and Sticks
  • Spare Thread for Attaching
  • Tape Measure/Ruler
  • Optional, Spray Adhesive

Material Notes:

Motif: In place of the crocheted balloons, you could cut a balloon motif out of some felt or scrapbook paper, or maybe even find an appropriate sticker or stamp in the scrapbooking aisle of your local craft store.

Tag: I cut my tags from cardstock I had on hand, but you could buy pre-cut tags. Uline has some pretty colored ones in a large variety of sizes.

Time Spent:

The balloon motif took me under 10 minutes to work up, and the whole process of putting the gift together took about an additional 5 minutes. So quick, and easy!

Crochet Pattern Notes:

The balloon pattern was so easy to follow! After I finished the first one, I had the pattern memorized already to complete my second one.

Cute little pattern. I think the only thing I would change for next time is the “string”. I think I might actually work up a chain “string”.

Gift Tag DIY:

I used my tape measure to cut the two tags out of some cardstock from my stash.

Then I used my hot glue gun to secure the balloons to the tags. If I were to do these again, I would try crocheting a chain “string”, so I wouldn’t have to worry, but as is, you can see in the green one that hot gluing the “string down” looks ugly and messy. I should have used some spray adhesive for this as is, but I was rushing to gift the jars, so I just went with what I had.

Jar Gift:

I pulled some candy out of my fridge (because they’re better cold!)…

And filled the little jars up.

For the tag, I threaded my needle with some extra crochet #10 cotton thread, poked it through the balloon, and cardstock, and tied it around the jar, finishing with a simple square knot.

I only made two, and I color coded the balloons so I knew who it was going to, but you could write on the bag of the tag the name of the recipient.

So quick, so easy, so fun, and so versatile!

What I would do for a Snickers right now, lol. Love your balloon tags but I think I would have liked the initial letter ones, too. It’s a great idea. I will see if I can find a pattern for letters, else I will simply have to make them up. Scheduled for a pin.

hehe. If you weren’t so far away, I would share with you! I still plan on trying some initial ones because I just love that idea. My favorite letter pattern is the Crochet Alphabet from Moogly Blog. It’s free. I have used it over and over again – it’s great!

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
