A classic crocheted clutch worked in the back loops to create the fun ribbed pattern paired with a color block of cream and gray, and some handmade, crocheted buttons!

Materials:
- Maybe 200 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used Lily Sugar n Cream in the Overcast (Dark Gray) and Ecru colorways
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends & Sewing on Crocheted Buttons
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
- 2 Size 4 (5/8″) Snap Buttons (Dritz)
- Thread & #22 Tapestry Needle
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Bernat’s Handicrafter, Red Heart’s Smoothie, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran,Β Rico Creative Cotton Aran
I used yarn from my stash, and I did not measure any, but I am pretty sure I used less than half of one super size skein each color.
Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle.
I went with my go-to snap buttons closure for this purse, but you can always do a zipper, a loop and button, create handbag openings, leave it open and add a strap – it is completely up to you, but I love adding snap buttons.
The best option for thread is silamide thread. This is a durable, waxy 2-ply nylon thread. If you use this, you will only need to cut 2 strands, and double. If you use a regular sewing thread, like an all-purpose one, you will need to cut 3 strands, and double.
I have a free photo tutorial available on Knotions Magazine – How to Sew a Snap Button onto Crocheted/Knitted Fabric.
Time Spent:
I worked on my clutch on and off for 3 days days, for a total of about two hours, 15 minutes.
Measurements:
10″ Across Mid Body (where color change is); 11″ Across Top of Flap; 8.25″ Tall – my favorite size
I am also providing instructions to create a purse that is about 9.5″ wide by 5″ tall, as this is a very popular size.
Gauge:
Not essential. In the round, 15 SC in the BLO = 4″
Abbreviations:
- BLO – Back Loop Only
- SC – Single Crochet
- HDC – Half Double Crochet
- HDC2tog – Half Double Crochet 2 Stitches Together to Decrease
Pattern Notes:
The base of the purse is worked in rows back and forth, then the body begins with the first round worked around the base of the purse. After this first round, the rest are worked in a continuous manner meaning no slip stitch joining at the end of each round – this creates the continuous ribbed pattern. Joining creates a seam, which disturbs this stitch pattern.
Beginning chain does not count as a stitch.
Instructions for smaller purse are shown, with larger in parenthesis.
Pattern:
In Overcast, chain 29 (35). SC into the 2nd chain, and each across. [28 (33) SC]
R2 – 7: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, and each across. [28 (33) SC]
R8: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, and next 27 (33), work 6 SC down the side, 28 (34) SC across the opposite side of the foundation chain, work 6 SC up the side. Join to the 1st SC. [68 (78) SC]
Body Begins, R9: Chain 1. In BLO, loosely slip stitch into the 1st SC, SC into the next stitch and around [68 (78) stitches]
R10 – 16 (20): In BLO, SC in each stitch around. [68 (78) SC]
R17 (21) – 24 (31): Switch to Ecru. In BLO, SC in each stitch around.
If you do not want a flap, slip stitch join after the last stitch – a zipper would be perfect here! You may need to work a few more single crochets into the back loop only to even out the top of the clutch (a result of working in a continuous round).
Flap:
Slip stitch into the next stitch, chain 1. HDC into the 1st SC, and the next (31 (36) across. [31 (36) HDC]
R2: Chain 1, turn. HDC into the 1st HDC, and each across. [31 (36) HDC]
R3: Chain 1, turn. HDC2tog, HDC into the next 27 (32), HDC2tog. [29 (34) HDC]
R4: Chain 1, turn. HDC into the 1st HDC, and each across.
R5: Chain 1, turn. HDC2tog, HDC into the next 25 (30), HDC2tog. [27 (32) HDC]
R6: Chain 1, turn. HDC into the 1st HDC, and each across.
R7: Chain 1, turn. HDC2tog, HDC into the next 23 (28), HDC2tog. [25 (30) HDC]
R8: Chain 1, turn. HDC into the 1st HDC, and each across.
R9: Chain 1, turn. HDC2tog, HDC into the next 21 (26), HDC2tog, 2 SC into the same as the last stitch, SC 12 down the side of the flap, slip stitch in each stitch along the front of the purse, SC 12 up the side of the flap, 2 SC into the next stitch (same as the first). Slip stitch join to the first stitch. Fasten Off.
Weave in Ends.
Snap Buttons:
Using your sewing needle and thread, sew on your snap buttons. If you need help, I have a free photo tutorial available I put together for Knotions Magazine – How to Sew a Snap Button onto Crocheted/Knitted Fabric.
I used white thread because that’s what I had on hand, but you will want to match the thread to your fabric.
Okay, let’s talk about the snap button poking through… I really wanted to put my buttons where they ended up, and because of this, my buttons poked through the line of where my stitches were worked into (as opposed to the half double crochet stitches themselves). Because of this, I added my own handmade buttons to cover this up, BUT you can place your buttons in line with stitches themselves, and this will avoid them from poking through.
Buttons – Make 2:
Chain 4. Slip stitch join to the first chain to form a ring. Chain 1. Work 8 SC into the ring. Join to the first SC, and fasten off with a long tail for sewing.
Place buttons onto the desired spot, and sew in place (or hot glue if you prefer).
And I really love how my buttons turned out!
Please feel free to make and sell your own Dip-Dyed Clutch using this pattern, but please DO NOT claim this pattern as your own nor should you sell my pattern, and DO NOT re-publish my photos as your own. DO NOT copy and paste my pattern anywhere, link to it instead.
These are my Frilly Flowers (free crochet pattern). I love, love, love them.
I thought my clutch would go perfect with my new Cat Print Pocket Tee (runs small) from SheIn, my new Olive VIP Joggers found at Ross, and my FAVORITE Brown Almond Toed Chunky Heel Boots (order one size up) also from SheIn.
