Round Dip-Dyed Earrings – Free Crochet Patterns

May 31, 2019

This is a free crochet pattern for how-to crochet my new Round Dip-Dyed Earrings! This pattern features a fun color block pattern, paired with simple stitches, and uses only two small skeins of embroidery floss!

For hese fun Round Dip-Dyed Earrings, I used the same basic ribbed stitch pattern created by working into the back loops only, and then worked them over some pre-made hoops I found at my local JoAnns.

Imagine these with some fringe hanging from the bottom, or some beads.

Before I begin, I want to point out that this has been designed with non working yarn being crocheted over. This limits the size of the finished piece. This pattern WILL NOT work the same worked in one solid color, unless you are carrying the same solid color behind while you are working. I will release a second version of these earrings in a solid color, but will take some time to redesign.

If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop, Ravelry or LoveCrochet Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the views lost when you no longer need to return to the blog to for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! It helps fund supplies for new projects to share with you!

Materials:

  • Less than 150 Yards of Embroidery Floss – I used one skein of Iris 222 and one of 398 (one was Blue, and one was Tan but I don’t remember which)
  • C/2.5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
  • 2 40mm Hoops with Loop – I used #12353827 I found at JoAnns.
  • Pair of Earring Wires – I like to use 20mm French Hooks
  • Jewelry Plier/s – I like to use two, one for each hand

Material Notes:

Yarn: I think a fingering/sport weight yarn could also work.

Time Spent:

Just about 30 minutes for the pair.

Measurements:

Nearly 2″ Wide

Gauge:

At the End of Round 3: 1 5/8″ Wide – See Notes – 1.5″ Would be Good too

Abbreviations:

  • BLO – Back Loop Only
  • HDC – Half Double Crochet
  • SC – Single Crochet

DIY/Pattern Notes:

These earrings are worked in a continuous manner meaning no slip stitch joining at the end of each round – this creates the continuous ribbed pattern. Joining creates a seam, which disturbs this stitch pattern.

You will carry the yarn not being used being, and crochet over.

When working Round 4, you will crochet over the hoop just as you would a yarn tail. My suggestion for keeping the blue strand less visible from the right side is to hold it behind the working fabric when half double crocheting, not behind the hoop as shown.

This is called cupping. With a gauge of Round 3 measuring 1 5/8″, there is an teeny tiny bit of cupping that resolves itself once the ends are weaved in, and the earrings are finger pressed flat. If you can get your fabric to measure 1.5″, I think it would be even better.

If your cupping is more than a teeny tiny bit, I did write an article on this – 4 Ways to Deal with Cupping in Crochet, but in short, try going down one hook size. An alternative would be to try working Round 3 in single crochet instead of half double crochet (not tested).

Always open earring wires towards you, not side to side. Close in the same manner.

Pattern – Make 2:

With Tan, chain 5. Slip stitch join to form a ring. In BLO, work 5 HDC in Tan, then 5 HDC in Blue. (10 HDC)

R2: ALL IN BLO. In Tan: (SC, HDC) into the 1st HDC, 2 HDC into each of the next 4; In Blue: 2 HDC into each of the next 5 HDC. (20 HDC)

R3: ALL IN BLO. In Tan: (2 HDC into the next HDC, HDC into the next HDC) 5x; In Blue: (2 HDC into the next HDC, HDC into the next HDC) 5x. (30 HDC)

Place hoop over the top of the fabric so that the tails are under the hoop.

In the next round, make sure the 10th SC is worked to the right of the top loop, and the 11th SC is worked to the left of the top loop.

R4: ALL IN BLO. In Tan: (2 SC into the next HDC, SC into each of the next 2 HDC) 5x; In Blue: (2 SC into the next HDC, SC into each of the next 2 HDC) 5x, skip the next stitch, slip stitch join to the next stitch. (40 SC)

Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Attach your earring wires, and enjoy!

Thanks! I hope she enjoys 🙂 I had a lot of fun putting this pair together, and have already started a second in pink and yellow (like pink lemonade, hehe).

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
