Today the theme is Christmas Breakfast!
I’m going to be completely honest, when I saw “Christmas breakfast” as one of the post themes, it took me back for a minute. While I know some families have a special breakfast (or brunch) on Christmas, I never did, and so I really had to think… What do people have for breakfast on Christmas morning? My thought was something fast, and easy.
Pancake muffins are just that! I like to make a half batch (6), and eat one on my way to work – they are great for on the go. If I skip it for breakfast, I’ll have 2 for lunch. They don’t take too long too make, and hold well in the fridge for a few days, PLUS! There are soooooo many ways to change them up!
Find my recipe for these super Easy Pancake Muffins on my On Rockwood Lane blog.
Aside from the breakfast, I knew I wanted to share a buffalo plaid placemat that I’ve been working on since the beginning of October! Here’s a photo you may have spotted on Instagram – I’m @eyeloveknots.
This placemat is a definitely a labor of love taking a bit over 17 hours to complete, but I’m so happy with it, and can’t wait to decorate with it.
Need a new hand towel for the kitchen? How about my Through the Window Hand Towel (free crochet pattern)?

Materials:
- Small Amount of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Red Heart Super Saver in Black, Charcoal and Soft White
- 12″ x 18″ Sheet of 7 Mesh Plastic Canvas (soft or stiff)
- Tapestry Needle
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Caron One Pound, Bernat Super Value, Crafters Secret
Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends. Insert needle under the stitches, then grab the tip with the jewelry pliers and gently pull through (be careful because eye of needle or plastic canvas can break).
Time Spent:
This placemat took me just under 17.5 hours to complete.
Measurements:
With Border, 17.5″ Wide by 12″ Tall
Tip:
When working on a big plastic canvas project like this, it can be tough to get the stitches done in the center, and the further out you go from your comfort zone. I lightly roll my unworked canvas up to make the stitches I need to work easier to get to.
Plastic Canvas Pattern:
As a blogger, I rely on views to my blog to earn money from my ads. Please do NOT share my graph photo, or save the graph photo to Pinterest. Doing so, would allow makers to not have to return to my blog, which would result in a loss of views and income.
This graph is a bit busy, but the stitch pattern is super simple to do without the graph if it’s too busy for you.
Cut plastic canvas to 115 holes wide by 79 tall. I worked the whole thing first, and then cut off the excess after so I wouldn’t have to do any counting.
Continental stitch boxes of 6 stitches wide by 6 stitches tall. I started with white in the top left corner, and then did gray underneath it, and started the row next to it with black, and then gray underneath it, and continued this repeat all the way across.
When finished, whipstitch all the way around in black.
Please feel free to make and sell your own Plaid Placemat using this pattern, but please DO NOT claim this pattern as your own nor should you sell my pattern, and DO NOT re-publish my photos as your own. DO NOT copy and paste my pattern anywhere, link to it instead.

Thanks so much! I am quite proud of it! And the muffins are delish! You’re right – so easy to eat. I make them, and eat on them for a few days on my way to work.

Gorgeous!, yes a time investment, but there is something really wonderful about changing up your crafting a bit! I have collected a bunch of old magazines with plastic canvas doll furniture which i may get around to sometime! thanks for sharing on craft schooling sunday!
Alexandra says
How funny – I also have a little collection of plastic canvas furniture patterns. I am waiting for the day I have a little girl, and build her a doll dreamhouse!
Verna says
I can’t believe I haven’t made anything plaid yet. Never would have thought of cutting the plastic canvas after the project is done. Brilliant!!
Alexandra says
Hehe – thank you! I was going to cut before, but then I didn’t feel like counting it out… Worked out much easier this way.
Donna @ Modern on Monticello says
I just love the look of buffalo checks. And I’m excited because this is one of your projects I know I can pull off. So I pinned it to try out this winter. Still contemplating the crochet thing but for now I will start with this. Thanks for sharing every week.
Alexandra says
Hehe – yes! This is very doable, and I find to be a therapuetic project. And you can easily change up the plaid colors for other seasons too!
