Crochet Bunny Hat – Crochet Pattern Review

March 24, 2021

This is a crochet pattern review of the Crochet Bunny Hat designed by Make and Do Crew. Review done by Jessica Munroe for EyeLoveKnots.

With Easter just around the corner, I thought this would be the perfect time to bring out this delightful bunny hat. This pattern comes with 5 sizes and has a lot of room for additional details. You can add a sweet little face with button eyes or leave it bare. You can experiment with various types of yarn or colors or keep it simple. I opted for a neutral tone with blue accents. I absolutely love him, and his floppy ears are so cute!

I took some liberties with this hat (which I have mentioned below) and this pattern is forgiving and versatile. It is made to give you a lot of options to fit your personal style preferences.

Materials I Used:

  • Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Heather Gray & Light Blue
  • H8/5mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Optional, Stitch marker (helpful but I didn’t use)
  • Modern Bunny Hat with Floppy Ears, Free Crochet Pattern from Make and Do Crew

Material Notes:

The pattern uses Lion Brand Ve-luxe Yarn for the hat and I Love This Yarn for the face. I chose Red Heart instead (purely out of convenience) and it still turned out just as great.

Time Spent:

I spent approximately 3 hours on this project, including the time it took me to sew on the ears and the facial features. The hat itself didn’t take long but getting perfect placement of the ears and face took a little time in addition to actually attaching them to the hat.

Measurements:

The designer gives 5 different sizes from 0-3 months up to child size. I made my hat in the 6-12 month size, which fits a 15”-16” circumference head. The size and length of the ears are adjusted for the appropriate hat size. Each of these adjustments are given to you in the pattern (no guesswork!).

Gauge:

The gauge is 6.5 half double crochet by 5.5 rows equaling 2 inches (6.5 hdc x 5.5 rows = 2”). I will be honest and admit that I did not test my gauge because 1) I’ve made a lot of hats before, so I felt pretty comfortable without it and 2) I had an exact head measurement to work with, so I knew where I needed to be for sizing.

Pattern Notes:

The original pattern gives the hat a wavy brim. However, I made my hat for my nephew, so I opted to go with a straight edge in the same color as the facial features. The hat is worked in rounds and the ears are worked in a spiral. A stitch marker is helpful for the ears, but I didn’t end up using one.

Pop this hat into an Easter basket or use it in a baby’s First Easter photo shoot. No matter what, it is sure to be a hit. If you’re still debating on what to do for an Easter gift this year, whip this bunny hat up in an afternoon and you’ll be so hoppy, er, happy that you did!

Welcome!

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
