Welcome to the September Pinterest Challenge! The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate us to not just pin, but to make it happen!
The flower pattern is the Daisy Flower Pattern from Repeat Crafter Me.
This month’s challenge is Peace.
With today being International Day of Peace, our challenge this month is “Peace”.
When I was a pre-teen, peace signs were my thing – I had decor pieces and jewelry showcasing peace signs and the fun, groovy colors. Thinking back, I wish I would have kept up with the theme because I still love those things, and the whole 60’s and 70’s theme – I would love to dress the part, and decorate to match. If you like this theme too, you should check out this new to me blog – Aww, Sam – it’s far out!
So when it came to picking a project for this month, I went searching on Ravelry for a crocheted peace sign to make, which led me to this Peace Sign Afghan Square.
This image of this finished afghan with black peace signs, and colorful backgrounds by a fellow maker, Patti, is what first caught my eye, and was my inspiration.
You can find more ideas in my Decades: 60s & 70s board, and in my Hobby: Granny & Other Afghan Squares board.
What can you do with an afghan square? Turn it into a wall hanging, use it as a washcloth (if made in cotton yarn), stitch them together to make a scarf, rug, throw pillow or afghan, use it as the pocket of a garment or super scarf, and so much more!

Materials I Used:
- 60 Yards of Red Heart Super Saver – 15 Yards in Black, and 45 Yards in Turqua
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
- Peace Sign Afghan Square, Free Crochet Pattern from So Far, So Good
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives to Red Heart Super Saver: Caron’s One Pound, Bernat’s Super Value.
The beauty of this square is that you can work it with whatever yarn you want and the respective crochet hook to vary the finished size.
Time Spent:
I had my square done in just over 45 minutes.
Measurements:
8.25″ Wide by 8″ Tall
There is no gauge listed. The finished size wasn’t important to me, so I didn’t worry about it, but I was expecting closer to the 10″ the designer got, so I was a little surprised when I measured around 8″. I am happier with this size square though.
Pattern Notes:
This pattern was fun to work up. You can see the peace sign coming together the whole time, and there are so many color options. I enjoyed looking through all the projects in the Ravelry gallery for this square. At the same time, it frustrated me a bit because I always struggle with picking out colors for my projects, so with all the great inspiration, I didn’t know which direction I wanted to take it. I ended up going with a black peace sign, and my favorite blue, but in the scheme of groovy, maybe I should have incorporated some yellow or orange? I haven’t decided what I want to make yet, so for now, I’ve just done the one square.
I want to talk about three things that were completely user error because the pattern is written well, is easy to follow and there is even a video tutorial available.
1. I failed to follow Round 2 as written because I was looking at it on my phone, and all the the “FL…BL…FL…same stitch…next stitch…” was too much for me, but I must recommend to try to have more patience than me because it’s only done in this second round, and it is done intentionally to better set up the outlines of the peace sign making them look straighter and cleaner than what I achieved. For mine, I just evenly stitched in increases working the 3 stitches needed in each peace sign leg.
2. I used my usual method to keep my seam straight which involves working the first stitch of the increase into the first stitch just to the left of the beginning chain, and the last stitch of that same increase as the last stitch of the round working into the same stitch as the first but just to the right of the beginning chain. This resulted in me ended up with what looks like 4 stitches in the top leg of the peace sign, rather than matching the others with 3.
3. Because I altered my stitches as described above, I ended round 6 in a slightly different place so when I worked rounds 7 and after, in the end, I noticed my square was crooked. I ended up frogging the last 3 rounds to start over with one less repeat in the initial part.
Nonetheless, I still enjoyed working up this square. I have so many ideas for what it could be, but I am not what I want to set out to make, and the overall colors. What do you think? Would you like to see a specific project created with these squares? Drop me a line below.

I really like it because of the stitches outside the Peace sign & the peace sign – it’s not straight from center out, I like the indent just past the dot. Also the stitches outside peace sign. It really is a Great looking square! I’m looking forward to trying it! Thank You!
