I wish I had seen this adorable little pencil pocket pattern last month when I was preparing teacher appreciation gifts! This is so cute and just perfect for stuffing with gift cards or small goodies like Chapstick, hand sanitizer or chocolates. It is so simple to make but the impact is spot-on. Plus, it’s reusable!
You could make a whole range of colored pencils, or you could even adjust this by changing colors to make it a little Christmas light bulb for use during the holidays!
WHAT MATERIALS DO I NEED TO CROCHET A PENCIL GIFT POCKET?
- Worsted Weight #4 Yarn – I used Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in the Black, Buff, Bright Yellow, Dusty Grey and Light Raspberry colorways
- G6/4mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Pencil Gift Pocket Pattern – Free Crochet Pattern on ACraftyConcept blog | Paid PDF via Etsy
MATERIAL NOTES:
Black puff paint is something to note that the original pattern calls for. I didn’t have and personally didn’t want to add to my pencil gift pocket, but it needs to be noted that it is listed to put the “2” on the front of the pencil. I think you could even stitch it on the pencil but admittedly my surface crochet skills are severely lacking.
This is also a great scrap buster as it doesn’t take up a lot of yarn to make the pocket. I don’t know how it would turn out with other weights of yarn but I think the worsted weight is the best choice for sturdiness.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CROCHET A PENCIL GIFT POCKET?
I made this pencil gift pocket in around 45 minutes. It is made up of all simple stitches and works up super fast! It was more time consuming to switch colors so often than it was to do anything else. I think now that I have one under my belt and I understand how it is all constructed, I could make it even faster.
WHAT ARE THE MEASUREMENTS OF A PENCIL GIFT POCKET?
The length from pencil tip to eraser end is 4.75 inches. The width at the widest point is 4.25 inches. Theoretically, you could make the pencil taller or wider by adding more stitches or rows, but I wouldn’t suggest more than a few extra or it may take away from the cute, stubby pencil look.

WHAT IS THE GAUGE FOR A GIFT POCKET?
This pattern does not provide a gauge because it is not designed to be sized like wearable items are. However, my personal gauge was 20 single crochet by 4 rows to make a 4-inch square.

PATTERN NOTES:
This pattern is perfection. It is very well-written, has a stitch graph for reference and even includes a video tutorial! The designer even tosses in a little freebie with your pattern purchase (you will have to buy it to find out what it is)! I highly recommend this crochet pattern. It is the first one I have been this excited about in a little while so I can not praise the designer enough for this one!
And while school may just be ending, now is a great time to start working on some of these pencil gift pockets for Fall when school goes back, or you can make just the front side of the gift pocket and use it as an applique for different projects.
