Geometry Squared Triangle Shawl – Crochet Pattern Review

The October crochet along hosted by Happily Hooked Magazine was on the Geometry Squared Triangle Shawl, designed by Emily Truman (the magazine’s editor!). It goes all the way until the 31st, so still plenty of time to start one (or three). These work up quickly, don’t use a whole lot of yarn, can be easily be made larger, and would make a great holiday gift!

Materials I Used:

• 350 Yards (or two skeins) of Berroco’s Comfort DK Yarn in the Hummus colorway (2720)
• 4.5mm Crochet Hook (G hook?)
• Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
• Geometry Squared Triangle Shawl, Paid Crochet Pattern from Happily Hooked Magazine Issue 55

Material Notes:

Original shawl used Berroco’s Corsica (a cotton/cashmere blend – sounds lovely!). Berroco’s Modern Cotton DK would also be a really nice warm weather option, or Berroco’s Vintage DK for a cooler weather option, or any yarn really! This shawl is built from a point up so you can substitute even super bulky yarn if you wanted to, and just stop when it’s the size you want. Awesome!

Time Spent:

I worked my shawl up in a few seatings for a total of just under eight and a half hours.

Measurements:

Patterns: 34″ by 25″ by 46″

Mine: 25.75″ Tall by 22.25″ Wide by 35.5″ Across the Diagonal

Pattern Notes:

As I mentioned above, the type of yarn (and hook) aren’t essential for this shawl. The beauty of building from the point upward is that you can make it any size you want simply by continuing to work repeats until it reaches your desired size, making this a great stashbuster! I picked the Comfort DK yarn because it had been sitting in my stash for over a year, and I wanted to use a yarn the same weight as the pattern called for.

With the holes in the fabric, and the original Corsica yarn, or the Modern Cotton DK I mentioned, this would be a really pretty shawl for summer time, if you live somewhere where you can wear a neck scarf for fun – here in Florida, not so much, or in any fiber, where as a regular shawl for date night, a wedding, or just a day out and about.

The crochet pattern was written really well. It’s so easy to follow, it’s a two row repeat with continuous increasing, but it’s so catchy that you can mindlessly work it up while binge watching your favorite show.

One thing that may alarm you is the curling of your fabric on the side of the increases – this is normal, and will flatten out with the final border – no blocking needed!

I worked until my second skein of yarn was near the end – a total of 84 rows – saving just enough to work my final border.

For the border, the last row worked is one side of three. For the continuation, I worked it a little differently than written only because as written, it was creating a fan like edge, which I am not sure if it’s supposed to be decorative, or just because the stitches weren’t placed exactly right (as written), but I did not like this edge so I worked my second side as follows: “single crochet in each of the next 3 actual chains (not into the chain space), then I repeated (single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, single crochet in each of the next 3 actual chains) across, worked 3 single crochet into the last stitch to form a better corner than the written 2, and then proceeded as written to finish off my third edge. Working the second side like this gave made this side more even, and uniform to the rest.

All in all, highly recommended pattern – easy to work, any yarn works, and definitely would make an excellent gift!
