Heart Shaped Santa Ornament – Crochet Pattern Review – Golden Lucy Crafts

Last week, I shared a crochet pattern review for the Geometry Squared Triangle Shawl from Happily Hooked Magazine’s latest issue. This adorable little Heart Shaped Santa Ornament is also from that issue! I had about five favorites from this issue (#55) that were on my list, but with October almost over, and lots of other things on the list, this ornament is going to be my last from the issue (for now).

This ornament is super cute! It’s worked from five hearts of different sizes, and a little embellishing. If you aren’t familiar with Golden Lucy Crafts, she has a whole little series of heart shaped appliques. Stop by her blog, and check it out!

It’s super cute, and works up quickly, and can be used to embellish lots of things if you prefer to use it as an applique, rather than an ornament. Worked in sewing thread, you could probably even get a cute little pair of earrings from the pattern.

Materials I Used:

  • Small Amounts of Baby Bee’s Sweet Delight Yarn in the Naked colorway, and Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn! Sport Weight in Red and White
  • 3.5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
  • Hot Glue Gun and Sticks
  • 3 little .28″ (7mm) pom poms – I have a pack of 100 in various colors from Darice
  • Heart Shaped Santa Ornament, Paid Pattern by Golden Lucy Crafts for Happily Hooked Magazine Issue 55

Material Notes:

Olena used Paton’s Grace Yarn in the original design. Specifically, any lightweight yarn or even embroidery floss would be a fine alternative, but you can easily work this in any weight yarn, with respective hook, to get a variety of santa sizes.

The original pattern also includes sewing threads in the materials, and instructions you to sew on the pieces, and embroider the face, but I opted to hot glue my pieces together, and use pom poms for the face.

Time Spent:

The little hearts work up in no time. I had my Santa assembled in a little over half an over.

Measurements:

Pattern: 3.5″ Tall

Mine: 2.75″ Wide at Widest Point (Across Beard) by 4″ Tall

Pattern Notes:

The pattern for this ornament was so easy to follow, and the hearts worked up in minutes.

The only recommendation I can make is to leave a longer tail in the beginning because you will be working the first rounds stitches into the first chain.

As mentioned before, the original pattern instructs to sew the pieces on, and embroider the face on, but I wanted to do everything the quick, and effortless way. I knew I had some little pom poms that would be perfect for the face, so I went digging through my stash, and found a brand new pack of pom poms. I picked out two black, and one red, and then took all my pieces to the kitchen counter to hot glue together.

I think this santa would be adorable on the front of a stocking, or as a pretend pocket on a top, but you could also applique it onto a hat, a scarf, a throw pillow, an afghan square, a gift card pouch, a headband/hair clip, use as a tag on a gift… The possibilities are endless, especially when you work it up in different weight yarns.

How will you use yours?

Alexandra, thank you so much for reviewing my Santa ornament pattern! Your Santa turned out really nice and I like your idea to use small pom-poms for the eyes and nose. It is very clever! Also, I like that you used hot glue instead of sewing pieces together.

I was thinking of other ways I could use it this holiday season outside of an ornament, but I think it may end up there, and I agree – it will be a great addition! Thanks for stopping by, Jenny!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
