Round Overcast Coasters – Free Crochet Pattern

August 24, 2014

08.28.18 Complete Update: In preparation for an upcoming craft fair, I decided to make up a few sets of these round coasters to sell. When I revisited this pattern, I realized it was in need of an update.

This pattern was originally named “Crochet Coasters in Rainbow Bright Ombre”. It was one of my first crochet patterns that I designed, and originally published back in August of 2014. On the top right, you can see my original set. How fun!

In this update, I changed the hook size, and rewrote my pattern with less abbreviations so it is easier to read. This is a very easy pattern, and each coaster works up quickly. Great pattern for a beginner.

The more condensation these soak up, the heavier they will get. Just lay flat to dry when you are finished.

Attach a scratchy scrubber to one side, and these will work great for the dishes as well!

If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop or EyeLoveKnots Craftsy Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the views lost when you no longer need to return to the blog to for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! It helps fund supplies for new projects to share with you!

Materials:

  • 50 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used Lily Sugar n Cream in the Overcast [Gray] and Rainbow Bright Ombre colorways
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
  • Optional, Jewelry Pliers to Help Weave in Ends

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives: Bernat’s Handicrafter, Lion Brand’s Kitchen Cotton.

Time Spent:

I worked up a set a set of four in about 45 minutes.

Measurements:

4 3/8″ in Diameter

Abbreviations:

  • HDC – Half Double Crochet
  • SC – Single Crochet

Pattern Notes:

This pattern is worked in a continuous motion, meaning no join at the end of each round.

The skipped stitch, and slip stitches at the end of the last round help to even out the circle.

Pattern:

Chain 5. Join ring. Chain 1. Work 10 HDC into the ring, yarn over, insert hook into the ring… (10.5 HDC)

R2: …insert hook into the 1st HDC, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops, HDC into the same HDC, 2 HDC into each of the next 9 HDC. (20 HDC)

R3: (2 HDC into the next HDC, HDC into the next HDC) 10x. (30 HDC)

R4: (2 HDC into the next HDC, HDC into each of the next 2 HDC) 10x. (40 HDC)

R5: (2 SC into the next HDC, SC into each of the next 3 HDC) 10x, skip the next SC, slip stitch into each of the next 3 SC. (53 stitches)

Fasten Off, and Weave in Ends.

Please feel free to make and sell your own Round Coasters using this pattern, but please DO NOT claim this pattern as your own nor should you sell my pattern, and DO NOT re-publish my photos as your own. DO NOT copy and paste my pattern anywhere, link to it instead.

I apologize for the delay – I was not notified of receiving this comment. If you follow the written instructions for that part, you will see that you end up with 4 loops on your hook.
