Ceres Top – Crochet Pattern Review – MermaidCatDesigns

May 14, 2016

This is a crochet pattern review of the Ceres Top from MermaidCatDesigns.

I have been wanting to try some festival style tops so I went a searching on Etsy and decided I would start with this Ceres Top from MermaidCatDesigns.

There are so many other fun designs from this shop, I definitely plan on stopping by for more patterns!

UPDATE, 07.02.16: I’ve worked an updated review with back strap adjustment as shown above. Find my notes here – Ceres Top, Take Two.

Materials I Used:

  • Almost a full 4 oz/200 yard skein of Lily Sugar n Cream in White
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook (as recommended in pattern)
  • #18 Tapestry Needle
  • Optional, Jewelry Pliers
  • Ceres Top, Paid Crochet Pattern from MermaidCatDesigns

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives: Bernat Handicrafter, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran, Rico Creative Cotton Aran, Crafter’s Secret Cotton Yarn (from Hobby Lobby)

Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle.

Time Spent:

I had my top ready in about two hours.

Size:

One Size 32-36″ B/C Cup. Notes included for making an A size cup.

My Gauge:

13 SC by 14 Rows = 4″

Pattern Notes:

Overall the pattern was really fun, quick and easy to follow. Aside from discovering a few errors that have since been corrected, I didn’t have any issues with my top and the download was available right away. I would say with the step-by-step photos that this pattern would be suitable for an advanced beginner.

You could use the basic top and embellish in a variety of ways including adding a fringe along the bottom, working a different openwork pattern, or a color change to name a few. Though I don’t think it needs it, you could also add a lining, or elastic. I DO NOT recommend this top for use in the water – the cotton will absorb the water, the top will become heavy and lose it’s shape.

The great thing about using Lily Sugar n Cream yarn for this top is the fact that it machine washes and dries well, it’ll keep you cool in the hot weather, and it’s very durable to withstand machine washes and wear-after-wear. I have a few projects made from it that I have machine washed and dried. I just threw them in with my regular clothes and they have come out just fine. I would suggest if machine washing this top to throw in a lingerie bag.

These will definitely be great for upcoming music festivals or just hanging out in the hot summer weather.

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
