Yay! This is the fourth post of the year for the 2017 GrannySpiration Challenge!
This soap cozy (or cute little gift bag) has been a WIP of mine since June of last year (2016). The only thing waiting to be done was to sew in the ends – ugh! Can’t believe I let it sit for so long, but thanks to this challenge, I have dug it out and completed it – one of the things I wanted out of this challenge, which is awesome!
I have a few more soap cozies to share that were also sitting with this one awaiting the ends to be sewn in. These have been complied into my Soap Cozy or Small Gift Bag, Vol 1 eBook!
Fun Fact: In reference to the photo that shows my granny square cozy with two facial scrubbies and homemade soap towards the end of the post – the scrubbies and soap were gifts from my friend Milena of Milena’s Place π π π

Materials:
- About 50 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton – I used Lily Sugar n Cream inΒ Hot Green and Mod Blue
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives to Lily Sugar n Cream: Bernat’s Handicrafter, Red Heart’s Smoothie, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran,Β Rico Creative Cotton Aran
Other Recommended Yarns (with I9/5.5mm Hook): Red Heart’s Super Saver, Caron’s One Pound, Bernat’s Super Value
Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle.
Time Spent:
I had my cozy ready in about 45 minutes.
Measurements:
4.5″ Wide by 5.75″ Tall; 16″ Long Tie
Gauge:
16 HDC by 10 Rows = 4″
Abbreviations:
- HDC – Half Double Crochet
- SC – Single Crochet
- DC – Double Crochet
Pattern Notes:
Beginning chain 1 does not count as a stitch, but beginning chain 2 and 3 do.
Join to the first stitch unless otherwise stated.
The way I worked my color change: I worked all the way around up to the join. I inserted my hook into the first stitch, pulled Color B over my work so I could work over it and completed the slip stitch. I did the same thing in the next stitch. At the space, I inserted my hook into the space, dropped Color A, picked up Color B and then completed the slip stitch and continued on to the next round.
Working in this manner allows you to neatly carry up the colors through the piece and makes it a clean color change. I do have a photo tutorial you can see of this – How to Carry Up Yarn in the Round.
Alternatively, you can fasten off at the end of each round, and join your new color into the space but this will create many ends to weave in later. OR, you could work all of the cozy in a solid color and not have to worry about color changes. Just join to the first stitch at the end of the round, slip stitch over to the space, and begin again.
I am referring to my colors as I have used them, but basically you just need two colors for the pattern I used. You could use as many as you like, or just one. Completely up to you!
Bag Pattern:
In Blue, Chain 15. 2 HDC into the 2nd chain, and the next 12, 3 HDC into the last chain, HDC into the next 12 along the opposite side of the foundation chain, HDC into the 1st stitch. Join. (30 HDC)
R2: Chain 1. (3 DC into the next stitch, skip the next 2 stitches) 10x. Join. (10 clusters)
R3: Slip stitch over to the chain space, and pick up Green. Chain 2, 2 DC into the same space, (3 DC into the next space) 9x. Join.
R4: Slip stitch over to the chain space, and pick up Blue. Chain 2, 2 DC into the same space, (3 DC into the next space) 9x. Join.
R5: Slip stitch over to the chain space, and pick up Green. Chain 2, 2 DC into the same space, (3 DC into the next space) 9x. Join.
R6 – 9: Repeat Rounds 4 and 5.
R10: Slip stitch over to the chain space, and pick up Blue. Chain 2, 2 DC into the same space, (3 DC into the next space) 9x. Join.
R11: Slip stitch over to the chain space, and pick up Green. Chain 2, 2 DC into the same space, (3 DC into the next space) 9x. Join with Blue to the 2nd chain of the beginning chain 2.
R12 – 14: With Blue, Chain 1. SC in the 1st stitch, and each stitch around. Join. (30 SC)
Fasten Off, and Weave in End/s.
Tie Pattern:
With Green. Chain 2, 4 SC into the 1st chain. Join to the 1st SC. Chain 62, 4 SCs into the 2nd to last chain. Join to the 1st SC.
Fasten Off, and Weave in Remaining Ends.
Weave the tie in and out of Round 11. No crochet hook needed to weave in this tie. Both of my ties came out of the center hole to keep it all even.

What a neat idea! I love having less ends to weave in. Thanks for sharing the pattern! π
knots1prime says
You and me both! And even with that, it still sat around, lol!
Vibrant Jewels says
This is lovely yarn! I'm not sure what to make yet! Maybe use in a granny square afghan or perhaps a shawl!
knots1prime says
A lightweight granny square lapghan is a great idea! And it's absolutely lovely for shawls. I just used this beautiful Splash colorway in combination with a cream color in my new Reversible Celtic Weave Wrap pattern – http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/reversible-celtic-weave-wrap.

knots1prime says
It's my new favorite color right now! Even on my fingernails and toes, hehe!
Sandy Berl says
I will use this yarn to make a prayer shawl
knots1prime says
A prayer shawl sounds lovely! I have this same color and a bright green color that I have been wanting to use to make a wrap. My brainstorming and swatches haven't gotten me very far though…::sighs::…We'll see.
Sandy Berl says
I love yarn. More yarn giveaways please!
knots1prime says
I love yarn too! I have been trying to giveaway yarn I enjoy using, but am hoping to be able to expand a little in both my yarn use, and giving away yarn from some indie designers. Keep an eye out!
