Lacy Fingerless Gloves – Free Crochet Pattern

I originally designed these Lacy Fingerless Gloves back in April of last year (2016) to submit to the Happily Hooked Magazine for Issue #26, Light & Lacy. This issue features… You guessed it – Lightweight and lacy designs! All these designs are PERFECT now that it is officially spring time here, and will carry through into the summer.

Materials:
     – 145 – 215 yards of Light Weight #3 Yarn – I used Baby Bee’s Sweet Delight (found at Hobby Lobby) in Rosy Cheeks, Sugarplum (Lavender) and Sunkisses (Yellow)
     – I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook
     – Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends

Material Notes:
     Yarn Alternatives: Anne Geddes Baby Yarn

Time Spent:
     I had the small size ready in just over an hour, the medium in about an hour and fourty-five minutes, and the larger size ready in just two hours time.

Measurements:
     Width: 3.5″ across; 7″ around
     Lengths: 6.25″ to cover wrist, 9.25″ to hit mid-forearm, and 12.25″ to almost cover forearm.
     *As reference, here are my measurements: knuckles – 7″ around, wrist – 6″, forearm (where second size stops) – 8.5″.

Gauge:
     16 HDC by 12 Rows = 4″

Abbreviations:
     SC – Single Crochet
     HDC – Half Double Crochet
     FHDC – Foundation Half Double Crochet
     TC – Triple Crochet
     YO – Yarn Over

Special Stitches:
     Triple Crochet – yo twice, insert into stitch, yo, pull through (4 loops on hook), (yo, pull through 2) 3x.

     Foundation stitches are worked sideways and include the foundation chain and respective stitch. This is a great technique to use if: 1.) You are working something in the round that needs some added flexibility within the beginning chain, such as a hat worked bottom up, wrist warmers, shirts, pants, etc; 2.) You are working a project like a scarf, but don’t know how many stitches you need. You can work the foundation stitch up until it’s long enough.
         To FHDC: Chain 2 (counts as a stitch here). Yo, insert hook into the first chain, yo, pull through, yo, pull through first loop (to create foundation chain), yo, pull all three loops on the hook. First chain and HDC created. Looking at the stitch in your hand, you should see the top of the HDC to the right, and parallel on the left side, it should look like the opposite side of the beginning foundation chain. You will be working in these stitches on the left. To create the next stitch and each stitch after, yo, insert hook under both loops of the foundation chain (left side) yo, pull through, yo, pull through first loop, yo, pull through all three loops on the hook.

Pattern Notes:
     Beginning chain counts towards final stitch count.

If you aren’t comfortable working a FHDC, you can work a foundation chain of 26, and then HDC into the 3rd chain from the hook and each chain across.

In Round 4 there are two options for the thumb hole. I don’t necessarily have small hands but I have skinny fingers, and so I prefer option A which does not create a thumb hole – I just use any hole of Round 4 to stick my thumb through, and it fits comfortably. If you want a thumb hole though, use Option B. The thumb hole is added in the last part of the round so if you aren’t sure which to go with, work it first as Option A, and part of Round 5 and then put the glove on to see how it fits. If it’s too snug, rip back and go with Option B. When you join in Round 5, the thumb hole will come together.
If you are making these as a gift or to sell, I’d suggest going with Option B to be on the safe side.

There are also two options for the ending. I worked my gloves using Option A, but also made a pair of gloves for my mom and went with Option B for her.

If you need gloves that are larger in width, I suggest going up one hook size – if following along here, a J10/6mm. 

Brackets throughout pattern indicate repeat sections.

Instructions for shortest length is given, with longer options in brackets.

Pattern – Make 2:
     Chain 2. FHDC 23. Join to the top of the beginning chain 2. (24 HDC)

R2: Chain 1, SC in the first stitch, and in each stitch around. Join to the first SC. (24 SC)

R3: Chain 4. TC in the 1st stitch – first leg of first star stitch created, Chain 4, yo twice, DC into the center facing of the 1st chain (2 loops on the hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch as the TC (3 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch (4 loops on hook), skip 3 stitches, yo twice, DC into the next stitch (5 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch (6 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 6 loops, chain 1 to secure and create star center. At this point you should have 4 legs created. 
[Chain 4, yo twice, DC into the star center (2 loops on the hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch as the last two DCs (3 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch (4 loops on hook), skip 3 stitches, yo twice, DC into the next stitch (5 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch (6 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 6 loops, chain 1 to secure] 4x.
Chain 4, yo twice, DC into the star center (2 loops on the hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch as the last two DCs (3 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch (4 loops on hook), skip 3 stitches, slip stitch into the first TC and through the 4 loops on the hook. (18 leg groups)

R4 – THUMB HOLE: Chain 4. TC in the 1st stitch, chain 4, yo twice, DC into the center facing of the 1st chain (2 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch as the TC (3 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch (4 loops on hook), skip horizontal star leg, yo twice, DC into the next star center (5 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same star center (6 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 6 loops, chain 1 to secure.
[Chain 4. Yo twice, DC into the star center (2 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch as the last two DCs (3 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch (4 loops on hook), skip horizontal star leg, yo twice, DC into the next star center (5 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same star center (6 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 6 loops, chain 1 to secure] 4x.

*Thumb Opt A: Chain 4, yo twice, DC into the star center (2 loops on the hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch as the last two DCs (3 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch (4 loops on hook), skip horizontal star leg, slip stitch into the first TC and through the 4 loops on the hook.

*Thump Opt B: Chain 6, yo 4x (5 loops on hook), insert hook into the star center, yo, pull through, (6 loops on the hook), (yo, pull through 2) 4x, (2 loops on hook) yo twice, DC into the same stitch as the last two DCs (3 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch (4 loops on hook), skip horizontal star leg, slip stitch into the first TC and through the 4 loops on the hook.

R5 – 8 [13, 17]: Chain 4. TC in the 1st stitch, chain 4, yo twice, DC into the center facing of the 1st chain (2 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch as the TC (3 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch (4 loops on hook), skip horizontal star leg, yo twice, DC into the next star center (5 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same star center (6 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 6 loops, chain 1 to secure.
[Chain 4. Yo twice, DC into the star center (2 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch as the last two DCs (3 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch (4 loops on hook), skip horizontal star leg, yo twice, DC into the next star center (5 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same star center (6 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 6 loops, chain 1 to secure] 4x.
Chain 4, yo twice, DC into the star center (2 loops on the hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch as the last two DCs (3 loops on hook), yo twice, DC into the same stitch (4 loops on hook), skip horizontal star leg, slip stitch into the first TC and through the 4 loops on the hook.

R9 [14, 18] Opt A for a Narrow Wrist/Forearm: Chain 1. SC in the first two stitches, (2 SC into the chain space, SC into the last chain of the chain space and the next stitch) 5x, 2 SC into the chain space, SC into the last chain of the chain space. Join to the first SC. (25 SC)

R9 [14, 18] Opt B for a Wider Wrist/Forearm: Chain 1. SC in the first two stitches, (3 SC into the chain space, SC into the last chain of the chain space and the next stitch) 5x, 3 SC into the chain space, SC into the last chain of the chain space. Join to the first SC. (31 SC)

R10 [15, 19]: Chain 1. HDC in the first SC, and each SC around. Join to the first HDC. [25 HDC (31 HDC)]

Fasten off, and weave in ends.
