I worked on this cardigan on and off all September long – you may have seen peaks on Instagram and Facebook of my WIP, or in the newsletter. It was definitely a labor of love, but I had fun every step of the way. The pattern was really easy to follow, and with a four row repeat, I was able to memorize the pattern quickly. I did a lot of binge watching on Netflix while working on this.
Continue on for my review, and a surprise you won’t want to miss at the end of this post.
Materials I Used:
- Almost 4 Skeins of Berroco’s Modern Cotton DK Yarn (less than 1,340 Yards) in the Wetherill colorway (dark turquoise)
- G6/4mm Crochet Hook (as recommended)
- #20 Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends and Sewing
- Moss Cardigan, Paid Crochet Pattern by Kenneth Cormier for Happily Hooked Magazine, Issue #54
Material Notes:
Original pattern uses Premier’s Cotton Fair Yarn. These are great warm weather yarns. If you want a cooler weather yarn alternative, try Berroco’s Vintage DK, Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Sportweight, or Baby Bee’s Sweet Delight.
Pattern says you’ll need 1,268 yards.
Time Spent:
This cardigan is a labor of love. I worked on and off over a month for a total of twenty and a half hours! Each panel took me almost 7 hours.
Measurements:
My Panels: 38″ Long by 16″ Wide
Patterns: 40″ by 17″
Sized as a One Size Fits All.
For reference, I wear a junior’s large/woman’s medium.
Pattern Notes:
The pattern doesn’t tell how to work up a sample for the gauge. I did some math, and came up with a chain 33, and worked in pattern. As an oversized piece, gauge isn’t terribly essential.
I don’t count a chain one as a stitch, but in this pattern, it is counted here, so in Row 2, you are skipping the first stitch, and working the single crochet into the second. For my first panel, which I made this discovery, I worked a decrease at the end of the row (because this is when I realized), but for my second panel, I just took off one of the foundation chains.
I had three full skeins of the Modern Cotton DK Yarn, and a skein that had been used a little. I knew the cardigan would require all four skeins, but I didn’t want to get stuck short later with the used skein, so I started with this one. I was able to work 26 repeats, just one shy from the pattern. Since the cardigan was oversized anyway, it really didn’t make a big deal.
Now, this is a one size fits most pattern. I wear a junior’s large/woman’s medium, and this cardigan was plenty roomy, but if you did want to make it larger, you could add a multiple of 11 to the width and/or more repeats for more length. For more armhole space, simply seam less.
My two panels. I laid them out with the right sides facing down, pinched the center together, and then had both layers together.
My technique of choice for seaming is a whipstitch. I did fasten off both panels with a long tail for sewing – only one of these came in handy, the other, I had to weave the end in, and start new.
Close up of the beautiful pineapple stitch variation.
The reason I picked this color was for work – my work colors are teal, pink, black and white. Even though this is more of a dark turquoise, it passes as a teal. This is me at 6:30am the day after finishing the cardigan getting ready for work.
I work the cardigan for my short five hour shift, and I will say that I thought I was going to LOVE this cardigan, but I didn’t :'(
I started out wearing it as seen above, but even being worked in a lightweight yarn, this oversized cardigan was kind of heavy in the front. I found myself having to keep adjust it, and a few times, I took it off…
Side view… The length was perfect for me, and the “sleeves” too.
This is me after work, happy because I finally figured out how I liked to wear it! It was definitely more comfortably this way, and didn’t feel as heavy. I simply gave more to the back (seen below), which raised the front, and let the cardigan rest on my shoulders better, and kept out of the way.
Back view.
And how about a few more?
In short, it’s a beautiful stitch pattern and cardigan, but if you don’t like oversized clothing (I don’t), it may not be for you.
I will be giving this cardigan away, and two copies of the crochet pattern, in next month’s Super Crafty Sunday Link Up.

You are so kind! Definitely a good layering piece for fall. I think it’d be cute over a long sleeve top or dress.

Very pretty cardigan on you! I really like the stitching and the color. This was the color I used to make my first shirt ( and last) in Home Ec Class in HS. π

What a lovely cardigan. The stitch looks very complicated. Love the neckline at the back, and the ruffles at the front.
Alexandra says
Looks complex, but was written really well, and easy to follow, and actually, it’s made with a variation of the pineapple stitch – you may know of these from doilies. Very pretty and fun!
Steph says
Love the drape of this cardigan!
Alexandra says
It is quite nice. The Berroco Modern Cotton is such a lovely yarn to work with.
