Welcome to the January Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by My Pinterventures. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen! This month, I am sharing a winter scarf that I have had pinned for too long. So glad I got the push to make it! Proud of this scarf.
I am in love with this whole outfit – can’t wait to work up the different pieces so I could have a similar outfit, but to start, I picked the scarf. I love the dark cranberry color paired with the cream, and I especially like the diagonal lines.
Walking through JoAnn’s, I came across an endcap full of Lion Brand’s Wool Spun yarn in a variety of colorway, two of them being the dark cranberry and cream you see in my scarf. It was like it was meant to be!
It took me a couple times to get the look I wanted. I did originally try to knit a plaid design, but it wasn’t working out so well for me because I need to practice knitting more, plus it was taking too long, so I ripped back, and went with solid granny squares (can never go wrong with grannies!) joined together using my favorite Pull Loop Through Method to give the slanted cream lines.
I worked the width wider than my usual 6″ because originally I thought about making this scarf as a super scarf, but when I polled a couple Facebook groups, I found that there weren’t that many super scarf fans, but that most people liked wider scarves, at a normal length (about 60″), so that is what I aimed for in my design.
If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop or LoveCrochet Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the views lost when you no longer need to return to the blog to for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! It helps fund supplies for new projects to share with you!

Materials:
- 762 Yards of Chunky Yarn – I used Lion Brand’s Woolspun Yarn – 4 skeins of the Claret colorway, and 2 of the Linen colorway
- K10.5/6.5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Berroco’s Vintage Chunky.
Woolspun Yarn has been discontinued – shame because it was such a beautiful yarn to work with, and in how it felt to wear. I think Lion Brand’s Scarfie may be similar to the Woolspun, but you may need to go up a hook size.
Gauge:
1st Square measures 3.25″ wide
Measurements:
7.25″ Wide by about 60″ Long
Abbreviations:
- DC – Double Crochet
- SC – Single Crochet
- PLT – Pull Loop Through (a join-as-you-go method)
- How to PLT: After DC in current piece, pull up a loop and pull out crochet hook, re-insert hook from the front through the corresponding stitch on Motif B [your corresponding piece] and pull loop through
Pattern Notes:
I recommend weaving in the ends of your squares as you go – they can add up.
The assembly is worked as one continuous join so they aren’t that many ends to weave in (plus you can easily adjust the width and/or length using this method). This means one strand the whole way from square one to the end. The instructions are broken into three pieces for ease in reading and following – do not fasten off at any of these points.
When joining new squares, just make sure that they are all facing the same direction – you can distinguish the direction by the seam from joining.
In working the continuous join, you are working from the bottom right corner of the scarf, upward, working in a backwards “S” motion. Section I works from right to left, then section II works from left to right, and section III finishes the scarf working down directly down, and joins to the very first single crochet.
Pattern:
Solid Granny Square – Make 32:
In Claret (dark cranberry), chain 5. Join to form a ring. Chain 4. (3 DC into the ring, chain 3) 3x, 2 DC into the ring. Join to the 2nd chain.
R2: Chain 2. (2 DC, chain 3, 2 DC) into the next chain space, [DC into the next 3 DC, (2 DC, chain 3, 2 DC) into the next chain space] 3x, DC into the last 2 DC. Join to the 2nd chain, and fasten off.
Continuous Join:
With Linen (cream), join yarn with a SC to the bottom right corner, then…
I. SC up the next 7 DC, (SC, chain 3, SC) into the next chain space, SC across the next 7 DC, (SC, chain 3, SC) into the next chain space, SC down the next 7 DC, SC into the next chain space;
From the right side: insert hook into the bottom right corner chain space of the next square, and complete the SC, PLT, SC & PLT into the next 8 stitches, chain 1, from behind: SC into the previous squares chain space, chain 1, SC into the current squares same chain space, SC into the next 7 DC, SC into the next chain space;
II. From the right side: (insert hook into the bottom left corner chain space of the next square, and complete the SC, PLT, SC & PLT into the next 8 stitches, chain 1), from behind: slip stitch into the center join, chain 1, repeat (…), from behind: SC into the next chain space, chain 1;
Repeat I & II until all of the squares have been joined – you will end on an I repeat, then…
III. Chain 1, SC into the same chain space, now working down the side, SC into the next 7 DC, SC into the next chain space, chain 1, SC into the center join, (chain 1, SC into the next chain space, SC into the next 7 DC, SC into the next chain space, chain 1, SC into the center join) down to the center join, chain 1, SC into the next chain space, SC into the next 7 DC, (SC chain 3, SC into the next chain space), SC into the next 7 DC, chain 1, SC into the center join, chain 1, SC into the last 7 DC, SC into the chain space, chain 3 and join to the very first SC with Claret.
Border R2: Chain 1. SC in each SC, chain 1, and chain space. At each corner chain space, work a (SC, chain 1, SC). Join to the 1st SC, and fasten off. Weave in remaining ends.

Very pretty scarf. I really like the color of it and the pattern. It looks so cozy!
Mother of 3 says
That looks nice and warm! I just love hand knit (or even crocheted) scarves. Pinned.
Debbee says
I like the retro, classic look of your design and color choice.
Alexandra says
Thanks, Debbee! Retro is fun. Someone else referred to it as a windowpane scarf – love that reference too!
Julie says
Clever, that continuous join is really clever. I would just do a few and then rejoin normally so it’s great to know your clever method, thanks.
Alexandra says
My go to before was a single crochet seam, but I hated that ridge it would create, plus still with so many ends to weave in. I found this one to be just wonderful.
Roseann Hampton says
Your scarf turned out pretty! Looks like it will be needed over the next week with all the cold weather forecasted!

Nice adaptation from your inspiration! I’ve pinned this so I can refer to the instructions for the continuous join.

Oohh, black and white would be sooo nice!

It looks really comfortable. I’ll have to look into your continuous joint tutorial, as this is something I’ve never really mastered.
Thank you for sharing at The Really Crafty Link Party this week. Pinned.

What an elegant scarf. Love the monochrome look. Thanks for joining in Ginx Woolly Linx Party for January.
Habiba says
Alexandra, what a wonderful scarf! I just stumbled over it yesterday on Facebook and commented. I have never crocheted granny squares and didn’t know how to join them together. Thank you for the detailed instructions. I am planning to crochet a blanket and am considering a granny square pattern.
Alexandra says
There are so many ways to join squares! I have only used a few, but I love this continuous method (and my Pull Loop Through) because it means less ends to weave in in the end. I know many people who enjoy weaving the ends in, but that isn’t me. Hehe. Granny square blankets are so much fun! You can experiment with the colors, or even alternate say a solid granny square with a classic one. Looking forward to seeing your blanket!
Kelli says
My mom used to make scarves and I loved them because they were so warm. I like that your scarf has originality to it…not mass produced. I especially like the colors as they are so beautiful against a winter skyline.
Alexandra says
Thank you, Kelli! This one is very warm, and plushy. Shame they discontinued the yarn because it is a beauty. I appreciate your kind words.
Erlene says
Pretty. I don’t know why, but I see a chocolate bar…maybe it’s because it’s chocolate lover’s month 🙂
Alexandra says
Mmm chocolate! I can see that, hehe
