Grannies Two-Tone Headband – Free Crochet Pattern

June 2, 2020

This is a free crochet pattern for how-to crochet my Grannies Two-Tone Headband.

Most days, you will find me with my hair up in a messy bun with maybe a clip or two in place. Doesn’t mean I don’t still enjoy headbands – I just wear them decoratively, rather than to hold my hair back.

This headband is worked in one of my favorite stitch patterns – the granny stitch, and my favorite joining method – the Pull Loop Through (PLT) Method (though you can substitute this for your choice of joining method).

There are two reasons I worked this in separate pieces: 1. I wanted to be able to attach my yarn to the hair tie, and work outwards, rather than finish and have to attach it to the hair tie later; 2. I wanted my stitch pattern to face a certain direction, rather than one long rectangle.

Working two pieces, and joining together gives you the freedom to create any combination of two tones, but it also looks great in one solid color. You could also wear it with the hair tie in the front instead of at the back.

I’ve teamed up with Hortense of Knitting with Chopsticks, Katie of Salty Pearl Crochet, Janne of Joy of Motion, Desert Blossom Crochet and Melanie of Counting Crafty Sheep, alongside 34 other bloggers for the Shop Your Stash Blog Hop. My day to share was Wednesday, June 3rd.

If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop, Ravelry or LoveCrafts Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the views lost when you no longer need to return to the blog to for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! It helps fund supplies for new projects to share with you!

Materials:

  • Small Amount of #10 Crochet Cotton Thread – I used Artiste Brand
  • D3mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Hair Tie – I like to use the ouchless kind with no metal piece

Yarn Alternative:

Aunt Lydia’s Classic #10 Crochet Thread

Measurements:

  • All: Skinny one is 0.88” wide, and the regular one is 1.5”.
  • Toddler: 13.5” circumference, to fit a head size of 19 – 20”
  • Child/Adult Small: 15.5” circumference, to fit a head size of 21-22”
  • Adult Large: 17” circumference, to fit a head size of 23”

Abbreviations:

  • SC – Single Crochet
  • DC – Double Crochet
  • PLT – Pull Loop Through (Joining Method)
  • To PLT: pull up on current loop (so it doesn’t fall out), insert hook from right side through corresponding stitch of previous square, grab loop with hook, tighten as normal, and pull through, then continue to work next stitch

Hair Tie Tube – Centered on Hair Tie:

Chain 7. SC into the 2nd chain, and each across. (6 SC)

Rows 2 – 10: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, and each across.

Fasten off with a long tail, and whipstitch the long sides together to create a tube. Fold the hair tie in half, and push it through the tube so it’s centered.

Band – Work 2, One at Each End of Hair Tie:

Row 1: Attach yarn to one end of the hair tie, chain 2 (counts as a DC here, and throughout). 2 DC into the hair tie, chain 1, (3 DC into the hair tie, chain 1) 1x (2x), DC into the hair tie. [7 (10) DC]

Rows 2 – 20 (23, 25): Chain 2. 2 DC into the 1st chain space, (3 DC into the next chain space) 1x (2x), DC into the 2nd chain of the beginning chain.

Fasten off first side, not second.

Finishing, Option 1

Fasten off with longer tail, and whipstitch center edges closed.

Finishing, Option 2

Row 21 (24, 26): Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st stitch, PLT, (SC into the next stitch, PLT) 8x (12x). [9 (13) SC] Weave in ends.

Thanks, Mica! I had fun just rummaging through my stash to pick some fun colors to use. I wear the teal and cream one out all the time – need to make another one that will match with anything.

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
