Free crochet pattern for how-to crochet indoor snowballs by Double Knotted Crochet.

Shawna with Double Knotted Crochet back again, finally!
I was away for a bit while we moved, but we’re finally settled in, if you can call it that, and I’m back in the swing of crochet.
While it may only be August, us crocheters know that our projects are always ahead in the year to be ready for the next season. I’m definitely crocheting hats and Christmas items on repeat here!
Today, I’m sharing my super simple Indoor Snowball Fight pattern with you so you can be prepared for Christmas parties and more! These fluffy snowballs are so easy and quick and are sure to be a hit with kids and adults alike.

Materials:
- Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn – in white or vanilla (may also use regular Bernat Blanket Yarn as the yarn weight is the same )
- K10.5/6.5 mm Crochet Hook
- Polyfill
- Yarn Needle
- Scissors
- Stitch Marker, or Scrap Yarn
Pattern Notes:
To begin the pattern, a magic ring is very important to prevent holes. A video showing how to create the magic ring can be found here by Bella Coco.
This pattern is worked in continuous spirals, not joining at the end of each round.
Time Spent:
Each snowball takes about 10 minutes to complete.
Abbreviations:
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- SC2tog – Single Crochet Two Stitches Together to Decrease
Pattern:
In a magic ring, crochet 6 SC. (6 SC)
R2: 2 SC into each stitch around. (12 SC)
R3: (SC into the next SC, 2 SC into the next SC) x 6. (18 SC)
R4: (SC into each of the next 2 SC, 2 SC into the next SC) x 6. (24 SC)
Take time to weave in first tail here.
R5 – 7: SC around (24 SC)
R8: (SC into each of the next 2 SC, SC2tog) x 6. (18 SC)
R9: (SC into the next SC, SC2tog) x 6. (12 SC)
Stuff your snowball with polyfill here
R10: SC2tog x 6. (6 SC)
Tie off leaving about 4 inches of tail.
Cinch close by weaving your yarn needle in and out of the remaining 6 stitches and pulling tight. Weave in ends well, and roll finished snowball to shape.

That’s it, you’re all done with your snowball! Make multiples for a proper fight and just beware those lamps and pictures! If selling, I highly recommend packaging in a gauze bag for that extra little touch.

I’m a huge fan of texture too!
My boys would LOVE to play with these! I actually taught them how to hand crochet a simple chain the other day, but that’s about all I remember from my crochet days. I did it as a little girl. I need to get back into it!
Alexandra has several posts on this blog teaching crochet if you ever want to pick it back up!
Oh what a fun idea! My kids would love this, it’s a shame I can’t crochet! So cute! 🙂
Hope that you are having a lovely weekend! 🙂
There are several posts on this blog that are geared towards teaching crochet if you ever want to learn!

Yes, in Florida, you gotta make your own snow!
I saw these over at Being a Wordsmith and just love them!
SO glad you like them and thanks for coming over!
These snow balls are wonderful! Great gift for kids or even attach a hanger for ornaments.
The ornaments would be so cute and add such depth to a tree!
Ha! What a whimsical project! Thanks for sharing with Creative Compulsions!

So much fun with no one getting hurt! Simple to make and every one can enjoy 🙂
Yes, indeed! I especially like no mess.
What a great idea! These would help my special-needs granddaughter!
Glad you like them. How sweet!
What size organza bags do you use to package them? I was thinking of doing 6 per package – how many do you do?
This pattern was shared by Shawna of Double Knotted Crochet. She no longer contributes to EyeLoveKnots, but I reached out to her, and she said “I would say a 6×9 organza bag or larger, and I sold in sets of at least 8.”
How big are the finished balls. TIA
I don’t have an exact size, but about palm size. I plan to work up a couple next week, and will update with measurements.
I love this pattern but mine comes out pointy at the beginning where you start the magic circle. Any ideas?
In place of the magic ring, you can try to start with a chain 2, and work the 6 SC into the first chain.
How many snowballs do you think a skein of Bernat yarn would make? These are so cute!
So glad you like it! Sorry I don’t have any answer, but I have been wanting to work on a video tutorial over the next couple of days, and I will weigh yarn out to have an answer for you. I am finishing up some videos now so it might be Monday before I get to it.
Hi, I’m wondering if you have washed these in the washing machine or are they to be hand washed? I was thinking of putting them in a laundry bag on a gentle cycle. Do you think that they will stand up to it?
Thanks so much,
Trish
Hi Trish! I haven’t washed these in particular, but I do know that the blanket yarn does machine wash and dry well, and poly-fil stuffing is also machine washable (in cold water on the gentle cycle) and dryable (low heat), and then when it comes out, you’ll need just need to roll it around in your hands to reshape in case the stuffing clumped together or shifted.
