Here is a free crochet pattern for how to crochet lightweight gift box earrings.
When I signed up for 24 Quickies with Marly, I knew I wanted to make some holiday earrings, and as the time got closer, I really fell in love with the idea of cute little presents.
It was a little more work than I anticipated, taking about two hours to whip up the pair, but I think they are really adorable, and I can see using the gift boxes in so many other ways too.
Each day, a new designer will be featured with their holiday quickie (knit or crochet), and the PDF will be free for day. That’s 48 free patterns! Make sure to visit with Marly HERE, and sign up to receive her newsletter so you don’t miss out on any of the beautiful designs!

Materials:
- Small Amount of Aunt Lydia’s Fashion #3 Crochet Thread in Red
- Small Amount of Aunt Lydia’s Classic #10 Crochet Thread in White
- 2.35mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
- Scrap Pieces of 7 Mesh Plastic Canvas (10 Mesh or Stuffing also works)
- 4 Jump Rings
- 2 Earring Wires (mine are called lever backs)
- At Least 1 Pair of Pliers (I used one in each hand)
Material Note:
I used 7 mesh plastic canvas to create a box to stuff into my gift box to give it shape, but you can cut pieces of 10 mesh to fit, or just stuffing instead.
Time Spent:
The pair took me just over two hours to whip up. I spent the first hour just making the little squares, and weaving their ends in.
Measurements:
Box is approximately 7/8″ Wide
Gauge:
One square = 9/16″ Wide by 9/16″ Tall
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- HDC – Half Double Crochet
Pattern Note:
I work into the back humps to create a clean, finished edge for seaming later. If you need help working into the back hump of the chain, I have a photo tutorial here: How to Crochet into the Foundation Chain 2 Ways.
Box Pattern – Make 12 in #3 Thread:
Chain 4. In back hump of chain, SC into the 2nd chain, and each across. (3 SC)
R2 – 3: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, and each SC across. (3 SC)
Fasten off, and Weave in Ends.
Plastic Canvas Box – Make 2:
Cut 4 pieces of 7 mesh plastic canvas that measure 3 x 2 holes, and 2 pieces that measure 2 x 2 holes.
Cut a long piece of thread, and work on sewing these plastic canvas pieces into a box shape with the 2 x 2 holes on the top and bottom. No need to fasten off at any point, if you need to cross an area, you can just run your yarn strand into the box to get to the area since no one will see the inside of your box.
Begin Assembling Gift Box:
Cut a long stand of matching thread, and begin sewing up the crocheted squares to create the box shape, but leave a space to insert the plastic canvas box.
Insert plastic canvas box, and finish seaming up the gift box. No need to fasten off at any point, you can run your needle and thread up through a seam if you need to get to a different area. Weave in at the end.
Bow – Make 2 in #10 Thread:
Chain 4. Slip stitch join to form a ring. (Chain 2. 4 HDC into the ring, chain 2, slip stitch into the ring) 2x. Fasten off with long tail.
Pull initial tail tight to close up the hole from the beginning chain 4, and sew closed like you would on a beanie, then for the other tail, pull loop all the way out to break it. Begin wrapping the tail around the center of the bow until desired look is achieved. Thread tapestry needle, take thread to wrong side, and weave in and out of center wrapping.
Wrap Gift Box with #Thread:
Chain 17, wrap around the box in one direction and slip stitch to the first chain, then chain 7, wrap in the opposite direction to cross the box the other way, and slip stitch to the corresponding spot of the initial chain 17 (should be the center), chain 7 more, then slip stitch to the 1st chain. Fasten off with a long enough tail to sew on bow.
Secure the two ends near the center, then square knot them together, and weave in the initial tail.
Sew on the Bow:
Place bow right at the top center of the box. Secure the bow to the box by sewing on behind the bow so it’s not visible from the right side. Fasten Off.
Assembly Into Earrings:
I tried a few ways of adding the jump rings to see how the earrings would hang, and I found it a little more difficult to get the finished look I wanted because I really wanted the jump rings to hug the bow, but it completely covered up the bow, so I settled with the way you see in the photos. I’m still pretty happy with the finished pair, and can’t wait to wear out!
Open a jump ring (making sure to open towards you, not side to side), and attach a second one as well as the corner of the bow. Close. Open the second jump ring to attach earring wire.

Just looking at the first photo or your earrings, I wouldn’t have guessed that you used plastic canvas. You’re such an inspiration!
Alexandra says
You’re so kind, Verna! Thank you. So glad you like them. Plastic canvas just helps shape them a little bit, and I love that it’s so lightweight.
Laura Bambrick says
I’m loving the ornament and jewelry ideas! These are such great ways to use up that extra little bit of yarn! These would make super cute mini ornaments, too!
Alexandra says
Definitely a good scrap project. I love the idea of using them as mini ornaments. Would be perfect for the little trees I set up in my kitchen. I also think I might make a few sizes, and use them to make an ugly sweater party headband.
