Honey the Hedgehog – Crochet Pattern Review

March 13, 2021

This is a crochet pattern review of Honey the Hedgehog designed by Mocha Stitch. Review done by Jessica Munroe for EyeLoveKnots.

I was asked if I could make a hedgehog by a friend. I loved how this little guy turned out so much that I knew I had to share it with all of you. It is just so darn cute, and you can cuddle this one without getting poked! My kids loved him so much that they each asked me to make them one too.

This pattern is well-written, includes photos for guidance and works up just like it should. But this is not a mindless pattern for crocheting in front of the TV. You need to watch your work closely. I had to do a bit of frogging a few times because I missed a stitch and threw off the remainder of my row.

Materials I Used:

  • Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Buff (Pattern calls for 50-70 yards) and Coffee (Pattern calls for 60-80 yards)
  • G6/4mm crochet hook
  • Poly-fil stuffing
  • 8mm safety eyes
  • Black embroidery thread
  • Sewing needle
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Honey the Hedgehog, Paid Crochet Pattern by MochaStitch on Etsy

Material Notes:

The pattern calls for worsted weight cotton yarn, but I do not enjoy working with cotton yarn as much. I contacted the designer to ask if acrylic would be acceptable. She said any type of yarn is fine as long as each color is the same weight. The pattern also uses a C/2.75mm crochet hook (the designer recommends using a hook that is at least one size smaller than recommended for the yarn that you use) but since I used a different yarn type, I needed a different size hook.

Time Spent:

Honey the Hedgehog took me about 6.5 hours to make. That time includes the stitching on of all the pieces, embroidering the nose and affixing the eyes.

Measurements:

The finished hedgehog measures approximately 4” in height and 6” in length. My hedgehog was a bit larger due to the change in hook size and yarn type but not much. It fits very nicely in the palm of your hand.

Gauge:

Gauge was not necessary for this pattern.

Pattern Notes:

This pattern is done using continuous rounds (hence the advantage of the stitch marker). The quills of the hedgehog are achieved by alternating between front-popping and back-popping popcorn stitches. The designer has been wonderful enough to include a detailed photo tutorial of how to do this. But please pay close attention to your stitch count and what direction you are working your popcorn stitches because this is not a pattern where you can fudge things at all. It will make a difference.

Also, the pattern suggests sewing on the ears before you sew on the quill backing and then you add the remaining body parts. However, I stitched on my hedgehog’s nose, ears, and legs before stuffing him. I found it easier to be able to reach inside and pull my needle through versus doing it all on the outside. Just look at those little legs!

The skill level noted on the pattern is “Advanced Intermediate”, but I don’t think I would consider myself to be at that level and I was still able to produce an adorable animal. Don’t let yourself be intimidated by that.

The hedgehog was so fun to make and turned out as cute as can be. I even ended up making a tiny bow and stitching it on between the ears since this one was going to a little girl. Overall, I loved this pattern and I know you will too!
