Have you seen the latest Disney movie Encanto yet? It’s a must-see. After my daughter saw the movie, she really loved the poncho that one of the characters, Camilo, wore. She asked me if I could make her a poncho, I said ‘absolutely’ and here we are!
I went with two simple colors, one of them being pink as it’s her favorite. As you may already be able to tell, it uses the Granny stitch, which makes for an easy and quick project with adorable results.
Materials I Used:
- Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in White and Light Raspberry
- Size H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Yarn Needle
- Scissors
- Unicorn Poncho, Paid Crochet Pattern from Frisianknitting on Etsy
Material Notes:
I chose to use only two colors instead of a rainbow of colors. As long as you have the same weight yarn throughout, you could use any number of colors you like. I have to admit, a rainbow one would be super cute!
Time Spent:
The poncho took me approximately 4 hours to make, including weaving in ends. I also need to mention that my timing on this may be slightly off as I had a small injury to one of my fingers while I was making this so it made crocheting go a little slower than usual.
Measurements:
The poncho size I made was the 6-7 year old size. I did make it 6 rows shorter than the pattern called for, based on my daughter’s height. Therefore, the one I made measures 15.5 inches from the center of neck to the point on the front. It measures 24 inches across at the widest point.
Gauge:
The gauge is 4 inches by 4 inches equals 18 by 28 stitches. I’ll let you guess if I followed the gauge based off my other pattern reviews…
Pattern Notes:
The pattern is very easy to follow. The last round says to fasten off once it’s complete but I actually did a finishing round of single crochet in each stitch before fastening off.
The pattern also gives sizing for ponchos for newborns to adult. There are photos included for how to do double crochet and the foundation row as well, which I found to be useful. Bonus: when you purchase this pattern, you get one in English and one in German (in case that is helpful for you)!
Also, don’t be fooled that the pattern creator’s name is Frisian Knitting; this is absolutely a crochet pattern. Overall, this pattern is great; it is well written and very easy with beautiful results!
