My sister-in-law sends me crochet inspiration from time to time and this sunflower scrunchie was the latest one she sent. Once I saw it, I knew I needed to make it for my daughter. It is so simple but adds such a cute touch to updos. I love the pop of color along with the flash of fun that it brings to an otherwise normal bun.
The design is made to represent a sunflower but really, you could do any color combinations you like to make a whole bouquet of scrunchies! While we are at it, I guess it’s not really a “scrunchie” either but you get the idea!
WHAT MATERIALS DO I NEED TO CROCHET A SUNFLOWER SCRUNCHIE?
- Lightweight #3 Yarn – I used Patons Astra yarn in Maize Yellow
- G6/4mm crochet hook
- Elastic hair tie
- Sewing needle
- Sunflower Scrunchie, Free Crochet Pattern from Alyssa’s Handmade
MATERIAL NOTES:
The original pattern calls for Marvel yarn (the designer is from Australia so I am assuming this is an Australian brand) but I couldn’t find it. In fact, looking online, it seems like it may even be discontinued. But I went to my favorite website in scenarios like this: yarnsub.com. If you click here, this will show you the alternatives to the Marvel yarn I looked for.
The first alternative I could locate anywhere was Patons Astra. However, I could only find it in a couple of colors and brown wasn’t one of them. Considering that you don’t see much of the base of the scrunchie under a bun, I decided to make the whole flower in yellow.
Note that the pattern says you can use any yarn you like but I wanted to try to use something as close to the designer’s recommendation as possible. I didn’t know what other yarn options Australia has compared to the United States and I didn’t want to risk it being too stiff with acrylic yarn.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CROCHET A SUNFLOWER SCRUNCHIE?
19 minutes to be exact. This works up SO fast! Seriously! I am not even a fast crocheter by any means so I am sure it would be even quicker for some.
It is the perfect last-minute gift or stocking stuffer too. You can make so many very quickly and they look exquisite.
What are the measurements of a crocheted scrunchie?
The hair elastic used in the pattern was 5cm in diameter and mine was too, but you are able to use any size you like. My flower measures 5 inches across from petal tip to petal tip. However, no measurements were given from the pattern.
Gauge:
This pattern does not provide a gauge because it will vary based on the size of hair tie you use. I wasn’t sure how to produce my own gauge for your reference given the unique crochet design, but the designer does provide instructions on adjustments in case you have a larger sized hair tie.
PATTERN NOTES:
This pattern is wonderful! It is super easy, and the designer provides a video tutorial as well. It was so quick to make but it was fun too! I love patterns that work up quickly because I am always so excited for the finished product reveal. This was perfect for that!
I want to make more for all my daughter’s friends, and you can be sure this will be a staple among our summertime hair accessories!
