Spooky season is nearly here, and I am ready! Normally around this time, I am crocheting a new patch of pumpkins for my mantle, but I wanted to do something a little different this year. I came across this skull pattern and I knew it would be the perfect addition to my lineup!
One of the things I love about crocheted decor is that it gives “spooky” a bit of a whimsical vibe. I’m not going for gore and scares; I want a cozy fall setting with a touch of eerie. This skull hits that target for me!
I think this pattern could be easily adjusted to make larger skulls if desired and for those who are talented at surface crochet, you could make sugar skulls for Dia de los Muertos or even add a crack in the skull.
WHAT MATERIALS DO I NEED TO CROCHET A SKULL?
- Small Amounts of Worsted Weight #4 Yarn – I used Red Heart Super Saver worsted weight in White and Dusty Grey
- H8/5mm crochet hook
- Poly-fil
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Skull, Paid Crochet Pattern from Little Raven Fiber Arts via Etsy

MATERIAL NOTES:
Materials are easy: worsted weight yarn and a small amount of poly-fil stuffing, which you might already have sitting in your stash. You can easily switch up the weight of the yarn, and use the respective size crochet hook, to change up the finished size of the skull.
The pattern is worked in a nearly continuous round so if you have trouble keeping track of your starting point, I recommend a stitch marker, but it’s not required.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CROCHET A SKULL?
I made this skull in just over an hour. It took more time to make sure I was crocheting in the right spots at certain places than it did to do the actual crocheting. It’s worked up nearly entirely out of single crochet, so it makes very quick work!
WHAT ARE THE MEASUREMENTS OF THE SKULL?
The skull measures 2.75 inches tall and 3 inches wide approximately.

WHAT IS THE GAUGE FOR A SKULL?
The gauge provided by the designer is 18 stitches by 19 rows to create a 4-inch single crochet square. I had the same gauge.
PATTERN NOTES:
The pattern is pretty simple and there are photos provided for clarity. There are a few places where the verbiage was a little confusing for me, but it was quickly decipherable, especially with assistance from the pictures.
The designer requests to be contacted in regards to selling finished products from their pattern so that is something to bear in mind when crafting these little skulls.
All in all, this was a success, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!
