Recently one of my co-workers found out that I have a crochet business and let me know that she has been in search of a crocheted Dachshund puppy to look like her dog. After searching through different patterns on Etsy, I landed on the Dachshund puppy pattern by Antonina Naimаnova of ToyStoryPatternsAU.
After having reviewed the Kitten Key Chain pattern by the same designer, I knew that I could count on this pattern to be well-written and easy to follow. I’m super happy to report that this pattern did not disappoint! The no-sew pattern for this crochet Dachshund puppy was easy to follow and relatively beginner-friendly. The pattern includes important tips for making sure it turns out just like intended and helpful pictures throughout the entire pattern. If you are looking for a cute Dachshund puppy pattern, I would definitely recommend this one!
What Do I Need to Crochet a Dachshund Puppy?
- Bernat Baby Velvet Yarn in Chocolate
- G6/4mm Hook – I used my WeCrochet Dots hook
- Polyester Fiberfil Stuffing
- Yarn Needle
- Small Amount of Black Yarn for Embroidering
- Dachshund Puppy, Paid crochet pattern by ToyStoryPatternsAU via Etsy
Material Notes:
The Dachshund Puppy crochet pattern calls for Himalaya Dolphin Baby yarn or a similar plush yarn. I opted to use Bernat Baby Velvet instead, which is just a little bit finer. In the original pattern, the designer recommends a 4.5 mm crochet hook. I went with a G6/4mm hook instead because I used slightly thinner yarn. When using Himalaya Dolphin Baby yarn, the designer indicates that you will need one skein of the yarn. I made the entire Dachshund Puppy with less than half of a ball of the Bernat Baby Velvet and a small amount of stuffing.
I also started this pattern with Bernat Blanket Yarn in the color Taupe to see how it would work out. I used a J10/6.5 mm hook with the blanket yarn, and used an entire 150 g ball of yarn to make just the head, neck, ears, and legs. I anticipate the entire puppy will take 2.5 to 3 balls of yarn in the chunky size. If you do decide to go with a chunky version of yarn, know that the puppy will be almost life-size and will require significantly more stuffing!
In the pattern, the designer used 16 mm black safety eyes and a 10-15 mm safety nose. I opted to not use safety eyes and a safety nose because they can be a choking hazard. Instead, I used a small amount of black velvet yarn I had on hand to embroider a nose and the eyes. You could also use felt eyes and make a felt nose.
This pattern is made using continuous rounds, so you may want to use stitch markers to keep track of your rounds. You will also want to make sure that you have a good pair of scissors and a sturdy yarn needle to finish your Dachshund puppy plush.
How Long Does It Take to Crochet a Dachshund Puppy?
It took me approximately four hours to crochet this Dachshund puppy.
How Big Is a Crocheted Dachshund Puppy?
My finished Dachshund puppy measures approximately 3.75 inches wide at the ears and 10.5 inches long from the nose to the end of the tail. The puppy is about 2.5 inches tall.
Gauge:
Using a G6/4 mm crochet hook with Bernat Velvet yarn, a magic circle measures just over 1/2 inch in diameter.
Gauge is not critical in this type of project. You mainly just want to make sure that there are not gaps between stitches so that the stuffing does not come through. If you notice gaps, you will want to go down a hook size.
All About Making a Crocheted Dachshund Puppy:
The Dachshund puppy pattern by ToyStoryPatternsAU is an easy, no-sew pattern that works up easily in a few hours. This pattern is worked in continuous rounds and uses all single crochets, increases, and decreases which makes it a good pattern for a beginner.
This pattern starts out by making all of the pieces that get attached to the puppy – the two ears, four paws, and tail. These pieces are all made without stuffing and are folded flat and crocheted together. This makes it really easy to hide the ends inside so there is no sewing in ends! It is important that you make all of these pieces prior to starting the body because they will need to be crocheted into the body as you go.
I found the body really easy to make and the directions for when to add the ears, paws, and tail were really clear. Just keep in mind that Dachshunds have really long bodies, so you are going to be crocheting a lot of rounds. When making the body, you may have to add some extra stitches during the rounds where you attach the pieces. The designer mentions this each time and explains how to make sure you puppy’s parts are in correct spots.
If you use safety eyes and a safety nose like the pattern designer recommends, there will be some added dimension in the face. Since I opted to embroider the eyes and nose, the face was a little flat. I decided to do some face-shaping by sewing from under the chin up to each eye and back so that the eyes would be pulled back a little more. This face-shaping can still be done with safety eyes as well if you choose to use them. I also opted to sew my ears in place so they would stay down on the side of the puppy’s head. This is totally optional.
In the pattern, you can also find directions on how to crochet a sweater by changing the color on the puppy’s back. I decided not to make the sweater, but I still think it was a really cute option! You can literally dress the puppy up any way you like!
I really like how this Dachshund puppy turned out! While I wouldn’t say it is 100% realistic, I think it is a cute toy version of a Dachshund that would be great for someone that loves this dog breed. I hope you decide to try out this pattern! If you do, be sure to let me know what you think of the pattern!
