Tessellated Triangles Sweater – Part 1: Gauge & Ribbing

August 26, 2019

Part 1 of the crochet-a-long for how to crochet the Tessellated Triangles Sweater is on Gauge and the Beginning Ribbing section.

This post contains affiliate links for LoveCrafts. If you make a purchase by clicking on them, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

In the CAL Announcement post, I shared the yarn I used, and provided alternatives, plus the yardage required for each size.

If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop, Ravelry or LoveCrafts Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the views lost when you no longer need to return to the blog to for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! It helps fund supplies for new projects to share with you!

Let’s Talk Gauge:

To meet gauge with the Touch of Alpaca Yarn, I used an I9/5.5mm crochet hook. I am working on a second sweater to go along with the crochet-a-long, and with it, I am using some of Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn from my stash. To meet gauge with the I Love This Yarn, I had to drop down to a G6/4.25mm crochet hook.

One way to see if you are close to meeting gauge with yarn and given hook is to work up a small piece of the ribbing. In pattern, the ribbing for the bottom of the sweater equals 1.75″ wide, but I highly recommend taking gauge from the body of the sweater pattern as this is what most of the sweater is worked in.

Because of the lack of stretch, checking gauge is vital! Do not skip this step. This sweater is a lot of work, and I do not want it to not fit you in the end, or require a lot of frogging later.

Lengths are not essential as these can easily be adjusted with measurements I provide in the pattern as check points along the way.

Abbreviations:

  • SC – Single Crochet
  • BLO – Back Loop Only
  • MC – Main Color
  • CC – Coordinating Color
  • RS – Right Side of Work
  • WS – Wrong Side of Work

If you are not familiar with working into the back loop, it’s really quite easy. Looking at the image above, you’ll see there are what look like “V’s” along the top of my work. When you work a regular single crochet, you work under both of these loops. In this case, we want to only work into the back loop, so from the top of your work, insert your hook into the middle of the “V” picking up just the back loop onto your hook. Complete the single crochet as normal.

Pattern Notes for Working Gauge

You will work carrying the unused yarn behind and crocheting over, switching colors as needed. Even though the back of the sweater is a solid color, you will still need to continue carrying the coordinating color behind it, working over, to keep the same tension throughout. DO NOT CUT THE YARN.

With this in mind, the bottom ribbed edging is not worked carrying the unused yarn.

I highly recommend a stitch marker or scrap yarn to mark the first stitch of the round in the body of the sweater while there aren’t any joins.

Pattern for Gauge, Bottom Ribbing – 1.75″ Wide:

Chain 8. SC into the 2nd chain, and across. (7 SC)

Row 2 – 8: Chain 1, turn. in both loops: SC into the 1st SC, in the BLO: SC into the next 5 SC, in both loops: SC into the last SC. (7 SC)

At the end of 8 Rows, measure the width of the ribbed band. If it isn’t 1.75″ wide, you need to either go up or down a hook size, and try again.

Pattern for Gauge, Body of Sweater (Triangles):

Chain 60. Slip stitch join. Chain 1. SC into the 1st chain, and each around. Slip stitch join to the 1st SC. (60 SC)

*At this point, we need to get our coordinating color (CC) ready. When you work the first single crochet in the main color, you need to crochet over the coordinating color. You will continue to work over unused yarn throughout.

**The remaining rounds are worked continuously with no joining at the end of each round.

Round 2: In BLO & SC: (5 MC, 1 CC) 5x, in MC: SC next 30. (60 SC)

Round 3: In BLO & SC: 1 CC, 3 MC, (3 CC, 3 MC) 4x, 2 CC, in MC: SC next 30. (60 SC)

Round 4: In BLO & SC: 2 CC, 1 MC, (5 CC, 1 MC) 4x, 3 CC, in MC: SC next 30. (60 SC)

Round 5: In BLO & SC: 2 MC, 1 CC, (5 MC, 1 CC) 4x, in MC: SC 30. (60 SC)

Round 6: In BLO & SC: 1 MC, 3 CC, (3 MC, 3 CC) 4x, in MC: SC 30. (60 SC)

Round 7: In BLO & SC: (5 CC, 1 MC) 5x, in MC: SC next 30. (60 SC)

Repeat rounds 2 – 7 one more time, then take gauge across 20 single crochets. If it doesn’t equal 4″, you need to either go up or down a hook size, and try again.

Now that you’ve met gauge, let’s start with the bottom ribbing!

The ribbing part is designed to be wider than the base of the sweater, and this was done on purpose to comfortably accommodate the hips and behind. If you put it up to yourself, you will think you’ve done it wrong because of how much larger it is, but this is correct!

Bottom Ribbing – Sizes shown are XS (S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X)

With MC, chain 8. SC into the 2nd chain, and each chain across. (7 SC)

Rows 2 (RS) – 143 (167, 191, 203, 227, 239, 287): Chain 1, turn. In both loops: SC into the 1st SC, in BLO: SC into the next 5, in both loops: SC into the last SC. (7 SC)

Final Row (Fold ribbing): Chain 1, turn. Fold the strip in half laying the WS together. Slip stitch through across both layers.

Do not fasten off. This is where we will pick up next Monday!

Welcome!

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
