Tessellated Triangles Sweater – September CAL Announcement

August 26, 2019

This is the announcement for the September CAL (Crochet-a-Long). We will be crocheting the Tessellated Triangles Sweater! There is also a giveaway! One winner will receive a seven skeins of Berroco’s Comfort DK Yarn!

This post contains affiliate links for LoveCrafts. If you make a purchase by clicking on them, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

I originally designed this sweater for a magazine issue with the theme of sweaters, but my design was not chosen to be a part of the issue, so it kind of worked out even better because I thought it would make the perfect crochet-a-long project!

Before we get into my inspiration, and the details, know that in this crochet-a-long, you can make this into a regular top with short sleeves (my favorite!) or as sweater with both 3/4 length sleeves and long sleeves instructions included. Pattern also includes instructions for ladies sizes XS through 3X.

When I saw the call for the sweater issue, the first thing that popped into my head was the triangle tessellation pattern you see in the body of this sweater. Now, single crochet tapestry patterns and I don’t really get along very well (I get rather frustrated), but I knew working into the back loop would create a fun texture, make it easier to line my triangle pattern up, and be easier to hide my other color behind without being seen from the right side – all the things that frustrate me about tapestry, so win-win!

I had really wanted to use Lion Brand’s Touch of Alpaca Yarn for this sweater, and originally, I envisioned the dusty blue and cream combination, but while yarn shopping, the dark gray and purple really called to me. As you can tell by the final purple and pink color combination, the dark gray did not work out. Funny how when we start to work a pattern, it starts to speak to us. The dark gray was telling me that I should have picked a lighter color, so I went back to my local JoAnn’s, and picked up the pretty blush pink.

In my design process, I knew that I would need a different approach when I got up to the underarms because working in a continuous pattern only allows you to go so far, so I turned to my go-to half double crochet stitch pattern for a change of pace along the top and sleeves. Throughout the whole pattern, the stitch patterns are simple, and that’s exactly what I wanted so anyone could try this one.

Normally, I design my garments with negative ease because I don’t like oversized garments, and yarn usually stretches 4-6”, but with carrying my unused yarn behind and working over, this drastically limited the amount of stretch in the sweater, so this particular sweater is designed a little oversized so it will fit just perfectly, but if you don’t like the fit, it is so easy to customize, and I tell you how within the pattern.

How Do I Join the CAL?

It’s so easy to join in for this crochet-a-long! Each Monday from now through September 30th, I will be sharing a part to this crochet-a-long right here on the EyeLoveKnots blog, and each part will have free crochet instructions for building this Tesselated Triangle Sweater.

Deadline to enter the giveaway is Sunday, October 6th at 11:59pm EST.

Schedule:

Monday, August 26th: CAL Announcement & Materials + Gauge & Ribbing Instructions

Monday, September 2nd: Body Triangle Pattern

Monday, September 9th: Continue Body Triangle Pattern

Monday, September 16th: Top Front/Back Panels

Monday, September 23rd: Optional, Sleeves

Monday, September 30th: Catch Up

Yarn:

Lion Brand’s Touch of Alpaca Yarn (90% Acrylic, 10% Alpaca; 207 Yards [190 Meters]/100 Grams): #674-146 Purple Aster (MC), 5 (5, 5, 8, 8, 10, 10) balls; #674-104 Blush (CC), 2 (2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4) balls

OR roughly 1,500 (1,500, 1,500, 2,300, 2,300, 2,900, 2,900) yards in total of a lightweight Worsted Weight #4 Yarn

Special Note: For full length sleeves on sizes XS, S, M, one full skein required for each sleeve, about one and a half skeins for L and XL, and two skeins each for 2X and 3X, so if you don’t want full length sleeves, you won’t need as much of the main color.

Recommended Yarn Alternatives: Premier’s Everyday Soft, Red Heart’s Soft, Berroco’s Vintage Yarn, Lion Brand’s Wool Ease, Caron’s Simply Soft

*I did also use Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn, and met gauge going down two hook sizes.

Available Sizes

Ladies XS (S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X)

Finished Circumference: 30 (34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54)”

Finished Length: 24” for All Sizes

Finished circumference is 2” larger than average bust size for each respective size.

Sample worked in Medium size on model that is 5’5″ with 38″ bust.

Carrying the unused yarn throughout takes away the stretch from this sweater, so where this yarn would normally stretch 4-6”, it now only stretches maybe 2”.

Giveaway:

At first, I was just going to host the crochet-a-long, and not worry with a giveaway, but I really want to share something with you, so I dug through my stash, and pulled out 7 skeins of Berroco’s Comfort DK Yarn (1 winner).

You can enter once a day for multiple entries! To enter, copy and paste the link to either your Ravelry project for the Tessellated Triangle Sweater or an Instagram post showing your WIP of this sweater (must be a public account so I can view it). Do not share the same link more than once.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Thanks, Jess! I wasn’t even thinking Fall when I made this – was actually having trouble pairing the colors I wanted to use, but now thinking about it, I do love the purples found in the fall leaves during Fall. Glad it worked out.

Thanks so much, Debbie! I am definitely proud of this make, and love how I feel in it. Just wish the weather would cool down so I could wear it out before Winter.

Hi Alexandra, sorry I wasn’t able to do the CAL but I do plan on making 2 of them, one with and one without sleeves. I think both of them are beautiful so I decided to get enough yarn to do them both. Thank you for all your great designs. Keep up the good work!

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
