This is a free crochet pattern for how-to crochet square earrings, and how-to cross stitch a heart onto them! These are awesome lightweight earrings perfect for any time of the year.
This pattern was initially designed for The Stitchin’ Mommy, and first appeared there as a contributor post.
My first heart design was my Small Plastic Canvas Hearts, and since it I haven’t been able to get off of the idea of plastic canvas heart projects. I have been wanting to try a crochet version though, and I did and it didn’t work out! Ooops! So instead I turned to this sweet cross stitching project, and absolutely LOVE IT! I definitely plan on working on some other designs in a similar manner – if you have any special requests, drop me a line!
These earrings are easy to work up and work up fairly quickly, are flexible, very lightweight and have a fun finishing with the frame.
Alternatively, you could use it as a pendant for a necklace, a keychain, a tag on a gift or on the front of a blank card base (to name a few).
If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop, Ravelry or LoveCrafts Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the views lost when you no longer need to return to the blog to for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! Materials:
- Small Amount of #10 Crochet Thread – I used Artiste Cotton Crochet Thread in the Cloudy [Gray], Poppy Red, and Wild Berry [Purple] colorways
- B2mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
- 10 Mesh Plastic Canvas
- 2 Earrings Wires – I used 20mm Stainless Steel Ear Wires
- 8 6mm Jump Rings – I just used some generic ones found at my local JoAnn’s, hence the need to double them (for added security). I suggest some professional quality
- Jewelry Pliers (I like to have one for each hand)
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternative: Aunt Lydia’s #10 Cotton Thread.
Time Spent:
Just over an hour for the pair.
Measurements:
1.63″ Wide by 1.88″ Tall
Gauge:
12 SC by 10 Rows = 1.38″ by 1.13″
Abbreviation:
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
Pattern Notes:
At the end of the first side of working on the frame, you may think it’s not long enough, but it is! Just tug at your piece a little to stretch. The second stitch of each corner should be over the pointy edge.
I worked an invisible join at the end of the earring base not only to give a clean, finished look, but also so I wouldn’t have to rejoin yarn to create the hanging loop.
I have a photo tutorial on How to Make an Invisible Join, but if you prefer to slip stitch closed, when you make your hanging loop, just secure the thread by running it under several stitches as if weaving it in (I make three passes).
“Do I have to crochet around the plastic canvas frame?” I have been asked this several times, and the easy is no, you don’t – you can block/starch the finished earring instead, but I do not like to block things.
New to cross stitching? I have a photo tutorial on How to Cross Stitch on Crocheted Fabric.
To Open Loop of Earring Wire, and Jump Rings:
Grab one end of your earring wire with your round nose pliers.
You will need to grab the other end with another pair of pliers or your fingers for leverage and stability.
Pull open the loop TOWARDS you, not side to side.
Close the same way.
Earring Base Pattern:
Chain 13. SC in the 2nd chain from the hook and across. (12 SC)
R2 – 10: Chain 1, turn. SC in the 1st SC and in each SC across. (12 SC)
Earring Frame:
The reason I added the plastic canvas frame was because my finished granny square was not really laying flat, and since I am not a blocker, I thought of the frame so it would keep it’s shape and still be lightweight and flexible.
Cut a rectangle out of the 10 Mesh Plastic Canvas that is 12 holes (Tall) by 14 holes (Wide), then cut all of the insides out so you are left with just the outer frame. This should be about just a little bigger than your finished piece.
To begin, hold your crocheted piece up to the frame, and beginning in the first stitch, and through both layers:
Chain 1, turn. SC into the first SC, and the next 10 SCs, 3 SC in the next SC – corner – SC in the next 9 stitches down the wide, 3 SC in the next stitch – corner – SC in the next 10 stitches across the opposite side of the foundation chain, 3 SC in the next stitch – corner – SC in the next 9 stitches up the side, 1 SC in the first stitch join as an invisible join (or work 2 sc, and slip stitch join).
Work an invisible join (or slip stitch join & see Pattern Note section).
Usually, I would weave in my tail piece at this time but for this piece were not. I only weaved my tail in under one stitch to secure.
Hanging Loop:
Weave the same piece you just finished using to create the invisible join into the back of the work over 7 stitches (to the center).
Pick up the thread with your hook, and chain 5. Skip the next stitch on the earring base, and then slip stitch into the next stitch. Fasten off, and weave in the end.
Cross Stitch Heart Graph:
As a blogger, I rely on views to my blog to earn money from my ads. Please do NOT share my graph photo, or save to Pinterest. Doing so, would allow makers to not have to return to my blog, which would result in a loss of views and income.
Follow the chart to add the heart to your earring base.
Need help with the cross stitching? I have a photo tutorial showing How to Cross Stitch on Crocheted Fabric.
Once finished, weave in remaining ends.
Assemble Earrings:
Use your jewelry pliers to open two jump rings.
One at a time, hook a jump ring into the loop of your piece and to one of the jump rings that aren’t open yet. Close.
(If you have some nice professional grade jump rings then you won’t need to have two side by side. Here it is for security purposes because the generic jump rings aren’t as strong).
Open the loop on the earring wire, hook onto both top jump rings, and close.
Repeat for second earring.

How creative to use the pc just for the frame. Am I correct to assume the earrings wires and rings can be bought at crafts stores or on amazon?
Alexandra says
You can find jewelry supplies in craft stores, but my favorite material is stainless steel, so I order mine online through Fire Mountain Gems.
