This is the fifth design in my Dip-Dyed series – a cosmetic bag, or crochet hook pouch! This bag is worked using a simple single crochet stitch worked into the back loop to create this fun, ribbed pattern.
I don’t often carry around a purse, and am not really a make up person, but I do enjoy using my bag for crochet hooks, and other essentials – yes, I keep a nail file in my hook bag!

Materials:
- 95 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used Lily Sugar n Cream in the Rose Pink and Ecru colorways
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
- Optional, Stitch Marker
- Optional, Fabric for Lining and Zipper (I used a pre-made bag that I stuck inside and then sewed in place – it measured 9″ wide by 6″ tall)
- Sewing Machine and Matching Thread (for lining)
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Bernat’s Handicrafter, Red Heart’s Smoothie, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran, Rico Creative Cotton Aran
I recommend cotton yarn because it’s more durable, and this bag will most likely see a lot of use, and being pulled and pushed around in a larger bag/purse.
Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle.
Time Spent:
Just over an hour
Measurements:
8.75″ Wide by 6.5″ Tall (measured just to the right of the last stitch, which is on the higher end)
Gauge:
15 SC in the BLO = 4″
Abbreviations:
- HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- BLO – Back Loop Only
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
Pattern Notes:
This bag is worked in a continuous manner meaning no slip stitch joining at the end of each round – this creates the continuous ribbed pattern. Joining creates a seam, which disturbs this stitch pattern. Round 1 is the exception.
Beginning chain does not count as a stitch.
Pattern:
In Pink, chain 34, then work 2 HDC into the 2nd chain, HDC into each of the next 31 chains, 3 HDC into the next chain, work 31 HDC across the opposite side of the foundation chain, HDC back into the same stitch as the first (to make 3 in this corner). Slip stitch join to the 1st HDC. (68 HDC)
R2: Chain 1. In BLO, loosely slip stitch into the 1st HDC, SC into the next stitch and around (68 SC)
R3 – 10: In BLO, SC into each stitch around, then join Cream, and fasten off Pink. (68 SC)
R11 – 20: In Cream and BLO, SC into each stitch around. (68 SC)
R21: SC into the 1st 58 SC, skip the next stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch.
Fasten off, and weave in ends. Add a lining if desired.

love it, thanks for sharing on craft schooling Sunday!
Vicki says
Your instructions say sc but at the end of each round it says (68 HDC), which is it, sc or hdc?
Alexandra says
Oops! Copy and paste got me. I just updated the post. The first round is half double crochet, and the rest are single crochet.
Marie says
I definitely could use one of these in my purse and another in my travel bag (when we can travel again that is). Pinned!
Alexandra says
Yes! One for each bag!
Michelle says
This little bag is adorable! Pinning!

Yes, definitely! Thank you for stopping by to drop me a line 🙂

That’s really pretty. I like a little bag for each of my ‘on the go’ projects so I can keep scissors, hooks, tape measure, stitch counters etc all together. This little pouch would be perfect for that.
Alexandra says
I try to only keep one (otherwise I forget things), but yes 🙂 A bag for all the essentials. I made myself a larger clutch to carry this one around in plus my notebook.
Betty says
Thanks, I love it. I keep a nail file in my hook bag too. Mine doubles as a 6″ ruler.
Alexandra says
I definitely think nail files should be in everyone’s bag – I hate when one of my nails catches my yarn. Good idea about using it as a ruler too – I hadn’t considered that. I guess I will need to measure mine!
