Crochet Apple Crochet Pattern Review

It’s me, Jessica with Nice and Knotty!

Visit with me on Facebook or Instagram for all kinds of awesome crochet makes and inspiration.

Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up the first week of May and I wanted to make something for my daughter’s Kindergarten teacher. Giving a teacher an apple may be a little bit of a dated cliché but this one is cute so I think it gets a pass.

I added on a little thank you card tied with a ribbon for our teacher gift but this apple would be great for other things too, such as toy play food or school and fall décor.

If you don’t want to write out the tag, there are some really great printable teacher gift tags on Etsy that you can instantly download, print out, cut and hang. I think this You Are Appreciated to the Core tag or I Couldn’t Have Picked a Better Teacher tag are both really cute and appropriate.

Materials I Used to Crochet an Apple:

  • Small Amount of Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Cherry Red, Coffee (for the stem) and Tea Leaf (for the leaf)
  • G/4mm crochet hook (Pattern calls for size E/3.5 mm)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Poly-Fil stuffing
  • Doll needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Apple Crochet Pattern, Paid Crochet Pattern from CrochetToPlay via Etsy

Material Notes:

The doll needle and stitch marker were not on the designer’s list of materials needed but I used them for my own benefit. I found the doll needle to be much easier to use when pulling the long strand of yarn through the entire apple and its stuffing versus a short yarn needle. The stitch marker was helpful in keeping track of where I was as this pattern is worked in a continuous round.

Also, the designer used Vanna’s Choice yarn while I opted for Red Heart since it was I had readily available to me.

Time Spent:

This apple, including the stem and leaf as well as attaching them, took me roughly 1.5 hours to complete. A whole bushel of apples could be grown in an afternoon!

Measurements:

According to the pattern, the finished size of the fruit should be 2 ¾” high and 3” in diameter. However, I know that I have a tendency to crochet tight and I wanted a larger apple so I used a bigger hook size. My apple measures approximately 3 ¼” for the height and 10 ½” for the diameter. Gauge is not essential for this project so using a larger hook didn’t have a negative effect on how my apple turned out or in keeping the stitches tight.

Pattern Notes:

There is a small error where the pattern goes straight from round 22 to round 24. I don’t know if one of the last two rows should have been repeated twice or if it should really just be 23 rows in total. I worked it as though it was only supposed to be 23 rows and it worked out fine. The next one I make I will do 24 rows and see if there is much of a difference worth reporting.

The stem and the leaf portions of the pattern just say to attach them to the apple when they are complete but there isn’t much guidance as to how to do it. Maybe it is more self-explanatory to others but personally, I would have preferred a little more direction.

Other than these small notes, I found this pattern to be very user-friendly and easy to follow! Whip up a few of these apples and you will not be disappointed.

Welcome!

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
