This rug has been a year in the making, and now that it’s here, I am a bit past the Fall season I wanted to use it for, but so excited for next year!
With each season/holiday, I change out my home decor including my shower curtain and bathroom rugs. Last Fall (2020), I found the most beautiful neutral colored shower curtain that is beige with brown leaf outlines, and I really wanted plushy burnt orange rugs to match. I usually get my rugs at Ross, but I didn’t have luck there, or like 5 other stores, so I decided I would make my own with Bernat Blanket Yarn. I absolutely love Bernat Blanket Yarn for home projects like rugs, and blankets. It is soft and cozy, and holds up so well to wear and tear and machine washing and drying.
Well, last year I purchased two balls of yarn thinking that would be enough, and then the yarn sat and sat on my yarn shelf. Flash forward to several months when I was changing out my shower curtain, I decided it was rug time.
I measured the space in my bathroom so the runner would go from the bath tub to the doorway, got to working on it, and filming the video tutorial, and then I ran into a hiccup. I ran out of yarn! Two balls of yarn gave me about 50″ in length, and I needed a third ball to give me the extra 10″ plus a single crochet border. I went to my local JoAnns, and grabbed a ball of the same colorway hoping it would match well enough (as sometimes the shades are slightly off).
When I got back home, and started working, I noticed the quality of the third ball was not good. Instead of being fluffy, it was flat on the top and bottom with a visible seam throughout, and it created a texture that was visible to the eye, and that I just couldn’t stand. I went back to JoAnns, and to my surprise, all of the balls of this color were the same way! I even went to another location, and saw the same issue with the Orange Leaf colorway. I was so mad at myself for not starting on the project last year when I could have easier gotten another ball closer to my purchase date, and also really upset at the quality of the yarn.

I laid what I had out on my bathroom floor trying to convince myself it was nice, but it just wasn’t what I wanted. I folded the rug up, and put it into one of my WIP bins where it sat for a couple months until I made the Harvest Bobble Accent Rug I shared last Monday. I needed something to layer it on, and this orange runner was PERFECT! Perfect for this space, and perfect for layering. I was no longer disappointed about it not working out for the bathroom, and decided next year, I would just make a new runner for the bathroom purchasing all three skeins at the same time. Sad it took me so long to finish this beauty up because now I’m ready to put my Fall decor away, and bring in all the Christmas stuff, but now I can’t wait to use it next year!

Cat approved! My sweet Shiloh just loves this plushy rug.

Hehe. Thank you!
Love it. Making one when I can get ahead on a couple of other projects I’ve already started. Thank you. Love the kitty.
So glad you like it, Frances! It’s been at my entryway ever since I finished it. It’s so lovely to walk on, and really adds a little something special to the area. Would love to see your version, and get pattern feedback if you give it a go 🙂
Love the rug.. I want to make one but Is it slippery on the floor or tile ? Did you use a backing ?
I’ve found that on my bathroom tile, it stays put, but on my wood floors, it’s slippery so if I use it in the living room, I just put down some rug backings/pads I got at Dollar Tree. They do sell larger ones made for bigger rugs at places like Home Goods, and shelf liners also work.
