When I got my copy of the Autumn 2021 issue of Crochet! Magazine, I flipped through and saw the beautiful Harvest Bobble Banner. I had to make it!
My intention was to keep it as a wall hanging, but I had a little bit of trouble with my sizing. Probably would have done better as wall hanging worked in a lightweight yarn, but really it worked out for the best because I just finished the orange runner you see under it, and this accent rug is the perfect topper to complete my Fall entryway. I’ll get a lot more use out of it this way.
The plushy orange rug underneath is my Super Chunky Shay Hallway Runner, and there is a free crochet pattern here on EyeLoveKnots for it.
Materials I Used To Make My Rug:
- 582 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn Per Coaster – I used WeCrochet Dishie in Swan (525 Yards), Clementine (38 Yards) and Bumblebee (19 Yards)
- G6/4.25mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook for Surface Slip Stitching Only
- Harvest Bobble Banner, Paid Crochet Pattern from Annie’s Catalog
Material Notes:
Original pattern uses Berroco Comfort. I have used the lightweight #3 version of this yarn, and it is really lovely. It’s soft, and sort of like a tubular knit strand. I really wanted to use 100% cotton for mine though, and that’s why I picked Dishie. An synthetic yarn, like the Comfort, will naturally work up to smaller dimensions as it’s fuller and more compact. I knew this when I picked the cotton yarn, and was ok with a slightly larger fabric.
Original pattern uses a smaller crochet hook – an F4/3.75mm. My preferred hook for 100% worsted weight cotton is an H8/5mm. The smallest I was willing to go for the sake of my hands was a G6/4.25mm, meaning the fabric would also come out larger than the original. I went with it anyway.
Time Spent:
I worked on this project in several seatings for a total of about 8.5 hours.
Measurements:
17″ Wide by 23.5″ Long
Pattern Notes:
I love the pattern combining the plain stitches with the puff stitches to create fun pops of color and texture.
Special note: the written pattern is only for the first several rows. The instructions for the pumpkin is charted, but very easy to follow.
My stripes are worked in the puff stitches as instructed. I feel like mine came out kind of messy, and I wasn’t really feeling the idea of messy puff stitches for the pumpkin, so I went with bobble stitches. Now that I’m using mine as an accent rug, I am really happy I went with the bobbles. They hold their shape a little better with wear, and the texture feels wonderful on the feet.
My go-to for wall hangings is a filet stitch pattern created by taller stitches and chains so I can slide a dowel into it easily, and then a chain for hanging. I was hesitant once I got this point because of the added sizing due to my yarn choice and hook size, but I went with it.
I liked the lines in between the pumpkin, so I thought I would leave off the embroidery. I went ahead, and weaved in all my ends, and hung the wall hanging on my front door where I hang my wreaths from. It stayed there for a few days, but it just looked incomplete, and awkward, so I took it down, folded it up and put it into one of my WIP bins for TWO MONTHS! Oh boy!
I pulled it back out a couple weeks ago, and made a new plan. First step, add the embroidery to give the pumpkin definition. I decided on surface slip stitch (because I’m a lot more comfortable with a crochet hook in my hand than needle) with two strands of the cream color held together and an H8/5mm crochet hook. I will share how to surface slip stitch. I took the photos with one strand only because that was my first attempt.
Insert the crochet hook into the fabric from the right side of the fabric down through to the wrong side. Make a loop with short tail end to weave in later…
… pull the loop through…
… keeping the tail and working yarn on the wrong side.
Holding the tension on the wrong side, insert your hook into the next working from the right side…
… down through to the wrong side. Yarn over with the working yarn.
Pull through to the right side, and then through the loop that was on your hook.
Keep working around following the shape of the pumpkin.
Second step on my list, get rid of the filet row on the top. I frogged the final edging, and the two rows at the top, then reworked the edging, and fastened off. Now, I am in love!
The plushy orange rug underneath is my Super Chunky Shay Hallway Runner, and there is a free crochet pattern here on EyeLoveKnots for it.
And it’s cat approved! My sweet Shiloh.
