My “Shay” line features easy crochet patterns featuring simple single crochets. Check more of them out right here.
A friend of mine reached out, and requested a “woodland themed” baby blanket. She sent me some examples of the colors, and from that, I went with the Smokey Green and Dark Gray combination you see. I finished the afghan off with a fun, thick border worked in the back loop only, but you can also work in plain single crochets instead.

Time Spent:
I was able to work up mine in just under four hours.
Measurements:
Quick guide: 0.13″ = 1/8″, 0.25″ = 1/4″, 0.38″ = 3/8″, 0.5″ = 1/2″, 0.63″ = 5/8″, 0.75″ = 3/4″, 0.88″ = 7/8″
- Newborn Photography Layering Blanket: 10.38″ Wide by 11.5″ Tall
- Newborn Photography Blanket: 20.38″ by 19.75″
- Newborn Blanket: 30.38″ by 30.75″
- Lapghan: 35.13″ by 39.95″

While the newborn photography blanket is sized similarly to preemie blanket guidelines, I do not recommend a blanket made from Bernat Blanket Yarn for a preemie because it is too heavy for them, and they can become overheated easily.
The first two sizes are meant to be newborn photography photo props. Typically, the base is the blanket, and then the layering blanket is laid in a different direction on top, and then baby. Sometimes the newborn size is also used in photography.
Gauge – Not Essential:
In pattern, 8 SC = 3.63″ Wide by 4.38″ Tall
Abbreviation (US Term):
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- BLO – Back Loop Only
Pattern Notes:
Depending on the number of rows you work for your striping [aka color block], I recommend these ways of changing to the new color, and this is to keep the edges even, and without the previous color peeking through on the sides. If you are working an even number of color block rows, yarn over with new color in the last yarn over of the last stitch of the row. If you are working an odd number of color block rows, complete the row all the way across, then yarn over with new color, and pull on the tail end of the previous color to tighten – it will nearly disappear. Be careful not to pull too hard or the Bernat Blanket Yarn will rip.
The color blocks are too tall to carry up the yarn, so fasten off yarn each time after you switch to the new color.

Here is the back loop that we will be working into in the border.

Weave in ends using smaller crochet hook.
