At some of my recent markets, I have started selling different types of hats that customers can use to decorate their stuffies. These have been incredibly popular, so I have had my eye out on other ways to create personalized stuffies. When I saw the 15-in-1 Land Turtle Dress Up pattern by Allez Crochet, I knew it would be a perfect option for customization at my summer markets!

As part of the Fun and Fruity Crafting Event hosted by Yarn Crafts and Coffee, I worked up some of the fruit-themed turtle shells, and I love how cute this pattern has worked up! The turtle on its own is a nice size that makes a perfect toy, and the interchangeable shells are absolutely adorable. I can’t wait to make the rest of the shell patterns and try out the whole collection!

What Do I Need to Crochet the Land Turtle Dress Up Set?

  • Super Bulky (Weight 6) Plush Yarn – I used a variety of yarns including Baby Bee Snugs and Kisses and Bernat Blanket Yarn
  • K10.5/6.5 mm Crochet Hook – I love using my Clover Amour ergonomic hook!
  • Stuffing (linked below)
  • Small Amount of Black Yarn or Black Embroidery Floss for Mouth
  • Yarn Needle – I recommend using a Bent Tip Tapestry Needle (linked below)
  • 15 mm Black Felt Eyes
  • Land Turtle Dress Up, paid crochet pattern by AllezCrochet via Etsy

Material Notes:

This pattern calls for super bulky (weight 6 yarn). The designer used Premier Parfait Chunky, but I chose to use a variety of yarns including Bernat Blanket yarn and Baby Bee Snugs and Kisses yarn.

In addition to the yarn and hook, you will also need stuffing and a tapestry needle to sew on features and weave in ends.

When it comes to a fluffy stuffing, Fairfield brand has been a household favorite for over 80 years as it maintains it’s integrity well through use and washing (including in the washing machine!), and the bonus is that it is also hypoallergenic.

Tapestry Needles with the blunt, round end are essential for sewing and finishing on a number of yarn crafts, including crocheting, knitting as well as needlepointing on fabric and plastic canvas. The blunt, rounded end allows the needle to pass easily through the fabric created by yarn and holes on canvas without snagging (or getting your fingers) in the process. More specifically for crocheting and knitting, a Bent Tip Tapestry Needle makes weaving, grafting and sewing so much easier on the hands. The long oval eye makes threading strands of yarn easier, though you may still want to use a needle threader.

The pattern calls for 16 mm black safety eyes. I chose to use 15 mm black felt eyes instead, but you could also embroider eyes. For the mouth, you will need a small amount of thinner black yarn, such as worsted weight or crochet thread.

How Long Does It Take to Crochet the Land Turtle Dress Up Set?

The Land Turtle base took me approximately 1 1/2 hours to complete, although I anticipate it will go faster for future makes – there were just a few tricky spots to figure out.

The time it takes to crochet each of the shells will vary depending on the complexity. The simple shells like the plain shell and the solid colors only take about 20 minutes, while the more complex shells like the pineapple, take closer to 40 minutes.

What Size is a Finished Land Turtle Dress Up Set?

The finished land turtle with a basic shell measures approximately 9 inches long and 5.5 inches tall.

The pineapple shell makes the turtle measure approximately 7.5 inches tall.

Gauge (Not Essential):

Gauge is not provided in this pattern and is not critical for making stuffed toys like this. You mainly want to make sure that your hook size is appropriate for your yarn and that your stitches are tight enough together so that your stuffing doesn’t come out through holes between the stitches.

If you want your turtle to come out to be the same size as mine, using super bulky weight 6 yarn (Bernat Blanket) and a K10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook, a magic circle with 8 single crochets should measure approximately 1 1/4 inches in diameter.

All About Crocheting the Land Turtle Dress Up Set:

The Land Turtle Dress Up pattern is an intermediate crochet pattern. It is well-written with clear directions, photos, and video instructions. While there aren’t too many difficult stitches used throughout the pattern, the way the pieces attach together can be a little complicated, which is why this pattern is better suited for an intermediate crocheter, rather than a beginner.

The pattern begins with making the turtle body. You will start with the legs and tail, and use no-sew techniques to crochet the body together. While there is a color change for the body of the turtle, you will also need to make a shell to make it look complete.

There are options for a plain shell or any of 14 different shells. The options included in the pattern are listed below:

  • Blueberry
  • Daisy
  • Hamburger
  • Kiwi
  • Orange
  • Pineapple
  • Grape
  • Raspberry
  • Pizza
  • Rose
  • Strawberry
  • Sunflower
  • Watermelon
  • Dragonfruit

The individual patterns for the different shells are written out as modifications to the original pattern. Some of the patterns are the same, just made in different colors. For example, the pineapple, grape, and raspberry all use the same pattern, but are just made with different colors and embellished differently.

The shells are made with hidden little straps that go around the feet of the turtle to hold them on. I think the construction is really clever, and I really like this pattern because of this!

I can’t wait to see how these work for my upcoming craft shows, and I’m really excited to try the other shell patterns. I hope you try these out too! It’s so fun to know that one pattern can be made 15 different ways!
