In case you didn’t already know, 2026 marks thee 250th Anniversary of the United States. What better way to celebrate America’s birthday than with some cute firecrackers! The best part – Boom the Firecracker by Shield Maiden Crochet is kid-friendly, so little ones can be included in the fun on the Fourth of July and throughout the rest of the summer!

The Boom the Firecracker pattern is a super easy, quick make that is perfect for your patriotic decor, summer parties, and crochet markets. You can almost make two of these in under an hour, and they are super bright and happy. The realistic nature of the design, mixed with the plushness of the yarn, makes them versatile, so they can be used as decor or a stuffed toy. I definitely recommend trying out this pattern to help celebrate America’s 250th birthday!

What Do I Need to Crochet Boom the Firecracker?

  • Super Bulky (Weight 6) Plush Yarn in Red, Blue, White, and Gray – I used a variety of yarns including Big Twist Plush and Bernat Blanket Yarn
  • K10.5/6.5 mm Crochet Hook – I love using my Clover Amour ergonomic hook!
  • Stuffing (linked below)
  • Small Amount of Red and Yellow Yarn for Flame
  • Small Amount of Black Yarn or Black Embroidery Floss for Mouth
  • Yarn Needle – I recommend using a Bent Tip Tapestry Needle (linked below)
  • 15 mm Black Felt Eyes
  • Boom the Firecracker, paid crochet pattern by ShieldMaidenCrochet via Etsy

Material Notes:

This pattern calls for super bulky (weight 6 yarn). The designer used Premier Parfait Chunky, but I chose to use a variety of yarns including Bernat Blanket yarn and Big Twist Plush yarn. Other yarns that would work up in a similar size and texture include Baby Bee Snugs and Kisses and Premier Basix Chenille Brights.

In addition to the yarn and hook, you will also need stuffing and a tapestry needle to sew the final ends of the firecracker. There is also an option to add a bow, which requires a tiny bit of sewing.

When it comes to a fluffy stuffing, Fairfield brand has been a household favorite for over 80 years as it maintains it’s integrity well through use and washing (including in the washing machine!), and the bonus is that it is also hypoallergenic.

Tapestry Needles with the blunt, round end are essential for sewing and finishing on a number of yarn crafts, including crocheting, knitting as well as needlepointing on fabric and plastic canvas. The blunt, rounded end allows the needle to pass easily through the fabric created by yarn and holes on canvas without snagging (or getting your fingers) in the process. More specifically for crocheting and knitting, a Bent Tip Tapestry Needle makes weaving, grafting and sewing so much easier on the hands. The long oval eye makes threading strands of yarn easier, though you may still want to use a needle threader.

If you would like to give your firecracker a face like I did, you can use 16 mm safety eyes. I went with 15 mm black felt eyes instead. You could also embroider eyes. For the mouth, you will need a small amount of thinner black yarn, such as worsted weight or crochet thread.

How Long Does It Take to Crochet Boom the Firecracker?

Boom the Firecracker is a really quick make! I made mine in under 30 minutes!

What Size is a Finished Boom the Firecracker?

The size will definitely depend on what yarn you use. Using super bulky yarn, my finished firecracker was 7.5 inches long from the point to the bottom of the red base and 4.5 inches wide. The tail added an extra 5 inches of length.

Gauge (Not Essential):

Gauge is not provided in this pattern and is not critical for making stuffed toys like this. You mainly want to make sure that your hook size is appropriate for your yarn and that your stitches are tight enough together so that your stuffing doesn’t come out through holes between the stitches.

If you want your Boom the Firecracker to come out to be the same size as mine, using super bulky weight 6 yarn (Bernat Blanket) and a K10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook, a magic circle with 8 single crochets should measure approximately 1 1/4 inches in diameter.

All About Crocheting Boom the Firecracker:

The Boom the Firecracker pattern is a really quick and easy make! It is made in the round with all basic stitches, including single crochets, increases, decreases, and slip stitches. While there are color changes and some front-loop-only and back-loop-only crocheting, this is a very beginner-friendly pattern!
The color changes in this pattern all happen at the start of new rows, which makes it easy to navigate if you aren’t familiar with color changes. The only sewing involved in this pattern is attaching the wick and embellishing the stars and the mouth at the end.

I would definitely recommend this project for anyone that wants and easy and festive make to help celebrate the Fourth of July! I hope you try it out!
