Super Easy Chunky Chain Scarf – Free Crochet Pattern

July 5, 2014

This is a free crochet pattern for how-to crochet an easy chain scarf.

This post contains affiliate links for LoveCrafts. If you make a purchase by clicking on them, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

This post is one of my firsts, published in July of 2014 – back when Sashay Yarn was a thing, and finger knitting was just taking off as a trend. I had found some on sale at Pottery Barn, and bought up so much, that 6 years later (today), I still have a lot in my collection, haha!

My hopes when I purchased it all was to knit scarves, and crochet these chain scarves to sell in my EyeLoveKnots Etsy shop, but they never sold, and after a long time of storing them hoping for a sale, I ended up donating all the ones you see in this post.

While some of them are light enough to wear in the summer (depending on your yarn choice), they also will keep your neck warm in the cooler months.

Why use a crochet hook instead of finger knitting?

The idea of using my fingers, and getting loops that may come out inconsistent in size brought me anxiety. I decided to use a large crochet hook to replicate the look of a finger knit chain. You can absolutely use your fingers though! I just don’t have any tutorials on this.

If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop, Ravelry or LoveCrochet Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the views lost when you no longer need to return to the blog to for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! It helps fund supplies for new projects to share with you!

Materials:

  • 1-2 skeins of Super Bulky Yarn – I have used Red Heart Boutique Sashay Yarn, and Lion Brand Hometown USA & Wool Ease Thick n Quick Yarns
  • P11.5/15mm Hook

Material Notes:

With the Sashay Yarn, it was thick enough to do one single strand throughout, but for the Hometown USA & Wool Ease Thick n Quick Yarns, I worked with two strands held together – and I did this with the yarn tails from both ends, but if you have two skeins, it makes it a little easier to work with. You can also achieve similar results with three strands of a chunky weight (#5) yarn.

Time Spent:

15 Minutes

Measurements:

100″ Long in Circumference

Pattern Notes:

When you wrap the chain around your neck, you will not even notice the knot as it will be covered BUT you could crochet a small wrap piece to put around it, or even use a piece of scrap felt (I love felt because it doesn’t fray – it’s beginner friendly).

I have a photo tutorial for How to Crochet a Chain, if needed.

Pattern:

Make a long, continuous chain of 480 (or desired length).

After finishing your last chain, pull the yarn tail through that chain. To make it a continuous chain, take the beginning and end tails and tie them in a square knot, 2 – 3 times. Then you can cut off the remaining yarn.

Only Have Scraps?

I used scraps to make this one, and just worked until I ran out of yarn – makes for a cute layered necklace.

Try Wearing it Like This…

Wrapped around many times to get a layered look…

Fold in half, then fold in half again. Lay against the back of your neck, and pull one free end through the folded loop end.

Please feel free to make and sell your own projects made from my Chunky Chain Scarf pattern, but please DO NOT claim this pattern as your own nor should you sell my pattern, and DO NOT re-publish my photos as your own. DO NOT copy and paste my pattern anywhere, link to it instead.

Always love hearing what is liked best 🙂 By changing up the yarn type, it opens so many doors too! I appreciate you stopping by, and leaving me a little message.

I thought so too! Can’t wait to try it with some beads on the yarn.

Welcome!

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
