Crochet Preemie Fall Yellow and Orange Embellished Twin Hats – FREE Pattern

October 21, 2014

I have been on a fall hat roll lately. Here’s another cute little boy and girl hat set. This set also matches perfectly with my newly crocheted Candy Corn Colored Making Waves Legwarmers – as seen below.

Use my FREE All Sizes Basic Beanie pattern to create this set in any size!

*10.24.14 UPDATE: This was previous titled a “Crochet Newborn Fall…” Please see Pattern Notes section regarding title change.

Materials:
   – Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Orange, Yellow and White
   – H8/5mm Hook
   – Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends – I like to use a #18, or #20
Embellishments –
   – 1 1/8″/22mm White Button (for Beanie version)
   – 3/4″/17.8mm Yellow Button (for Shell Edge version)
   – Ribbed Pumpkin Beanie Pattern (Paid Pattern) for Flower
   – I9/5.5mm Hook for Flower (as recommended by pattern)
   – Partially Lined Alligator Clip or Be Prepared to Sew on Flower to Hat

Notes on Material:
My buttons came from Hobby Lobby. I used THESE white ones, and THESE yellow ones.

Time Spent:
The basic beanie takes me less than 30 minutes to work up. With the color change and the embellishment, each of these hats works up in roughly 30-45 minutes.

Measurements:
Crown measures 3.75″ in diameter to fit a head circumference of about 13.75″, and is 4.25″ long.

Gauge:
   Using 5mm Hook – 4″ x 4″
CH 16, DC in 3rd ST from hook and ea ST across. (14 DC)
R2 – 8: CH 2, turn. DC in ea ST across.
     Fasten Off.

Abbreviations:
   CH – Chain
   DC – Double Crochet
   ea – each
   ST – stitch
   SC – Single Crochet

Pattern Notes:
Beginning chain 2 does not count as a stitch.

Join to the first double crochet, not the beginning chain 2.

Change color in the last yarn over of the stitch.

If you don’t feel like embellishing your hats, the plain ones look great too!

10.24.14 UPDATE: This was previous titled a “Crochet Newborn Fall…” My sister-in-law, Bree, is a family photographer who does LOTS of newborn photo shoots. Following the posting of my All Sizes Beanie pattern, I whipped out quite a few newborn sized hats (including this one) based on the chart provided by Lorene of Cre8tion Crochet. According to her, the newborn head circumference is 13-14″ and the length should be 4″ – 4.5″. Upon completing my hats, I made a trip to her house to deliver them and she turned all of them away. She said they were sure not to fit any of the newborns that she photographs and that they would be better suited for preemie’s. SO – my suggestion for a newborn size would be to make the 3-6 Month Size as that one is exactly what she liked and requested for future hats.

Patterns:

Fasten Off and Weave in Ends.

*If you choose to attach a button, make sure it is secure! To attach mine, I cut a piece of yarn, and then pulled it apart to use two strands for sewing. I weave my end into the back of the area where I wanted my button to go, and then went through the two holes on the button four times, and then weave in some more. I then added a few dabs of hot glue to provide extra security.
IF THE BUTTON COMES LOOSE – it does pose a choking hazard to baby.

Shell Edge Version

R9: CH 1. SC in ea SC around. Join.
R10: CH 1. SC in the 1st ST, SK next ST, 5 DC in the next ST, SK next ST, (SC in the next ST, SK next ST, 5 DC in the next ST, SK next ST) around. Join to the first SC.
Fasten Off and Weave in Ends.

*The flower pattern I used came with the Ribbed Pumpkin Hat by Jennifer of Crochet by Jennifer. After working the flower, I then glued it onto a partially lined alligator clip so it can easily be removed if desired.
You can just as easily cut a longer tail when finished crocheting the flower to use to sew the flower onto the hat.

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
