Cuatro Esquinas de Abuela Afghan Square – Free Crochet Pattern

September 9, 2015

This fun afghan square was designed for the 2015 Mystery Lapghan CAL. I originally only had one to be released October 16th, but I jumped at the opportunity to design another!

The name for this square came from my mother. I knew I wanted either “Granny” or a form of ‘four’ to be in the title, but I couldn’t quite think of anything I liked. When my mother came out for some coffee, I hopped over to the kitchen counter and started bouncing ideas off of her. She wasn’t really into any of mine, but did come up with Cuatro Esquinas, which is Spanish for Four Corners. I said, “Okay, the Cuatro Esquinas Granny Square”, and she suggested “Cuatro Esquinas de Abuela”, which translates to “Four Corners of Grandma”. Hehe! Very unique, and creative – Love it! Hope you do too.

Materials:
     – Very small amounts of five colors of worsted weight yarn – I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Red, Grape, Jelly Bean (Green), Hot Rose and White
     – I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook
     – Tapestry Needle – I used a #18

Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Red Heart’s With Love. If using Vanna’s Choice, you may need to go down a hook size to meet my gauge; If using Red Heart’s Super Saver, Bernat’s Super Value, Deborah Norville’s Everyday Soft, or Caron’s Simply Soft, you may need to go down two hook sizes to meet my gauge.

You could easily work this up in two colors (one for squares, and one for join and edge), or three (one each for two squares and one for the join and edge).

Time Spent:
I was able to work up this square in just under 25 minutes.
Measurements:
Each smaller square measures 2.75″ across. All put together and with the edging, the completed square will measure 6″ across.
Gauge:
With I Love This Yarn and an I9/5.5mm Hook = 4″ x 4″
Chain 16, DC in the 4th stitch, and in each stitch across. (14 DC)
R2 – R8: Chain 2, turn. DC in the 2nd stitch, and each stitch across.
     Fasten Off.

Abbreviations:
     SC – Single Crochet
     DC – Double Crochet

Pattern Notes:
I have a photo tutorial for How to Crochet a Granny Square available.

In the first round, the final chain 2 is intentional. I always work the final chain of the first round one chain shorter, otherwise I find the last corner to be uneven.

If you work the granny squares with an invisible join as I have done, then do not work the final chain 1 as the invisible join will create that chain.

I have a photo tutorial for the Invisible Join available in my Newborn Twin Chunky Hats post.

Weave in Granny Square ends as you go. Crochet over joining yarn tails when working the border.

In the joining rounds, the numbers coordinate with the number of the photo in the collage.

Pattern:

Small Granny Square – Make 4
Chain 5. Join to form a ring. Chain 2, work 2 DC into the ring, chain 3 [first corner created], (3 DC into the ring, Chain 3) 2x, 3 DC into the ring, Chain 2. Join to the first DC, not the beginning chain 2.

R2: Slip stitch over two spaces into the next chain space. Chain 2, work 2 DC into the same chain space, chain 3, 3 DC into the same chain space, chain 1, (3 DC into the next chain space, chain 3, 3 DC into the same chain space, chain 1) 3x. Join – I did so with an Invisible Join.

Joining Squares

Lay out your squares as you want them to appear.
     Horizontally:
1. Pick up the two right side squares and lay them together with the wrong sides facing each other. Attach your new color in the right side chain space working through both layers. Chain 1, SC in the same chain space…

2.  Continue SCing in the next 8 stitches ending in the corner…

3 – 7. Work a single crochet decrease over the same corner and the corner of the next two squares…

8. SC in the same corner…

9. … And in the next 8 stitches. Fasten Off.
Vertically: Turn your piece 90 degrees to the right, and fold in half.

1. Reattach yarn to the right side chain space, working through both layers. Chain 1, SC in the same chain space, and the next 7 stitches ending in the corner…

2 – 4. Work a single crochet decrease over the same corner and the corner of the next two squares…

5. …And in the next 7 stitches.

6. Fasten Off, and lay out your piece.

Border:

Attach yarn – I like to do so in the DC next to the corner, rather than the corner itself. SC in the same DC and the next 7 stitches, single crochet decrease over the next two chain spaces, SC in the next 8 stitches, (5 SCs in the corner, SC in the next 8 stitches, single crochet decrease over the next two chain spaces, SC in the next 8 stitches) 3x, 5 SCs in the corner. Join to the first SC – I did so with an invisible join.
