This fun afghan square was designed for the 2015 Mystery Lapghan CAL. I originally only had one to be released October 16th, but I jumped at the opportunity to design another!
With I Love This Yarn and an I9/5.5mm Hook = 4″ x 4″
Chain 16, DC in the 4th stitch, and in each stitch across. (14 DC)
R2 – R8: Chain 2, turn. DC in the 2nd stitch, and each stitch across.
Fasten Off.
Abbreviations:
SC – Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
Pattern Notes:
I have a photo tutorial for How to Crochet a Granny Square available.
In the first round, the final chain 2 is intentional. I always work the final chain of the first round one chain shorter, otherwise I find the last corner to be uneven.
If you work the granny squares with an invisible join as I have done, then do not work the final chain 1 as the invisible join will create that chain.
I have a photo tutorial for the Invisible Join available in my Newborn Twin Chunky Hats post.
Weave in Granny Square ends as you go. Crochet over joining yarn tails when working the border.
In the joining rounds, the numbers coordinate with the number of the photo in the collage.
Pattern:
Small Granny Square – Make 4
Chain 5. Join to form a ring. Chain 2, work 2 DC into the ring, chain 3 [first corner created], (3 DC into the ring, Chain 3) 2x, 3 DC into the ring, Chain 2. Join to the first DC, not the beginning chain 2.
R2: Slip stitch over two spaces into the next chain space. Chain 2, work 2 DC into the same chain space, chain 3, 3 DC into the same chain space, chain 1, (3 DC into the next chain space, chain 3, 3 DC into the same chain space, chain 1) 3x. Join – I did so with an Invisible Join.
Joining Squares
Border:
Attach yarn – I like to do so in the DC next to the corner, rather than the corner itself. SC in the same DC and the next 7 stitches, single crochet decrease over the next two chain spaces, SC in the next 8 stitches, (5 SCs in the corner, SC in the next 8 stitches, single crochet decrease over the next two chain spaces, SC in the next 8 stitches) 3x, 5 SCs in the corner. Join to the first SC – I did so with an invisible join.
