Fresh Cut Coasters – Free Crochet Pattern

July 7, 2018

This post contains affiliate links for LoveCrochet and Happy Yarn Mail. If you make a purchase by clicking on them, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

Last week, I received my June’s Happy Yarn Mail, which is a set of super cute Prickly Pear Cactus Coasters. While I was working on them, I struggled a little with some cupping, so I redid my coaster base, and came up with these Fresh Cut Coasters.

The name of this colorway is Grass. After I finished one, I couldn’t get the imagine out of my mind of some fresh cut grass. I wanted to name it as such, but then I thought it wouldn’t fit so well if another color was used, so I cut out the grass part. Hehe.

If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop or EyeLoveKnots Craftsy Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the views lost when you no longer need to return to the blog to for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! It helps fund supplies for new projects to share with you!

Materials:

  • 102 Yards (55 grams) of Lion Brand’s 24/7 Cotton Yarn for a set of 6 (or about 17 Yards (9 grams) per coaster – I used the Grass colorway
  • G6/4.25mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternative: Berroco’s Weekend Yarn, several strands of #10, #5 or #3 Cotton Thread Held Together.

Usually, I list the number of yards needed with the respective weight yarn, as there are always many options, however, this 24/7 Cotton Yarn is listed as a worsted weight (#4) yarn, when it feels more like a lightweight (#3) yarn. While gauge isn’t important for coasters, I will say, I don’t believe you’d be able to achieve the same size with a worsted weight cotton like Lily Sugar n Cream, though you could always adjust the number of rows/stitches.

One skein of 24/7 Cotton will make 10 coasters.

Time Spent:

One coaster took me a little less than 20 minutes to finish, and I worked a set of 6, so about an hour and 45 minutes.

Measurements:

4 1/8″ in Diameter

Abbreviations:

  • HDC – Half Double Crochet
  • Rev SC – Reverse Single Crochet (aka The Crab Stitch)

Pattern Notes:

To keep the seam straight, and nearly invisible, I split the first set of increases, working the first one to the left of the beginning chain, and the second one at the end, to the right of the beginning chain, both into the first stitch. You may work as you are comfortable.

Beginning chain one does not count as a stitch in final count.

Join to the first half double crochet.

Pattern:

Chain 4. Join to form a ring. Chain 1. Work 10 HDC into the ring. Join. (10 HDC)

R2: Chain 1. HDC into the 1st HDC, 2 HDC into each of the next 9 HDC, HDC into the next HDC. Join. (20 HDC)

R3: Chain 1. HDC into the 1st 2 HDC, (2 HDC into the next HDC, HDC into the next HDC) 9x, HDC into the next HDC. Join. (30 HDC)

R4: Chain 1. HDC into the 1st 3 HDC, (2 HDC into the next HDC, HDC into each of the next 2 HDC) 9x, HDC into the next HDC. Join. (40 HDC)

R5: Chain 1. HDC into the 1st 4 HDC, (2 HDC into the next HDC, HDC into each of the next 3 HDC) 9x, HDC into the next HDC. Join. (50 HDC)

R6: Chain 1. Rev SC into each HDC around. Join. (50 SC)

Fasten Off, and Weave in Ends.

Hello! Thank you for the pattern! I really like how the seams are done. I don’t understand what you mean about splitting the increase though. Can you please help me understand that?
    Thanks!

Welcome!

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
