Snowcapped Cowl – Free Crochet Pattern

February 22, 2020

This is a free crochet pattern for how-to crochet my Snowcapped Cowl.

I don’t use Red Heart’s With Love very much, but I happened to have two skeins in my stash, and couldn’t help but fall in love with the soft, squishy feel. One of my favorite stitches for texture is the puff stitch, and I knew it would be a perfect pair with the With Love to create this soft, and squishy warm Snowcapped Cowl!

As far as snowy scenes go, I think this set would look great with aqua, blue or gray as the main color, or any color combo really! Being worked with just one skein, and a little extra for the ribbing, this is a great cowl to make as a gift, and can be worked fairly quickly.

It also will pull down over your shoulders for anyone size small and medium. You could easily increase the number of puff stitches in the cowl to create a wider piece if needed. I did not design this piece to cover the shoulders, but it’s an added perk.

Make the matching Snowcapped Beanie with my Free Crochet Pattern!

Materials:

  • 460 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Red Heart’s With Love, one full skein of Tan, and a small amount of White.
  • K10.5/6.5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Optional, Stitch Marker

Measurements:

Sized for average teen/woman – 14.5” Wide by 12.25” Tall.

Time Spent:

I worked my cowl up in about three and a half hours.

Gauge:

9 dc and 5 rows = 3”

Abbreviations:

  • yo – Yarn Over
  • FDC – Foundation Double Crochet
  • How to FDC: Chain 3 (counts as a stitch here). Yo, insert hook into the first chain, yo, pull through, yo, pull through first loop (to create foundation chain), (yo, pull through two loops on hook) 2x. First chain and DC created. Looking at the stitch in your hand, you should see the top of the DC to the right, and parallel on the left side, it should look like the opposite side of the beginning foundation chain. You will be working in these stitches on the left. To create the next stitch and each stitch after, yo, insert hook under both loops of the foundation chain (left side) yo, pull through, yo, pull through first loop, (yo, pull through 2) 2x.
  • How to Puff Stitch: yo, insert hook into the st, yo, and pull through [3 loops on hook].  *Yo, insert hook into the same st, yo and pull through. Rep from * 1 more time [7 loops on hook]. Yo, and pull through all 7 loops. Chain 1 to secure.
  • DC – Double Crochet
  • fpdc – Front Post Double Crochet
  • bpdc – Back Post Double Crochet

Pattern Notes:

The cowl is worked mostly in a continuous round to avoid the seam. Read instructions carefully for joining instructions. In rounds not joined, you may find it beneficial to place a stitch marker, or waste yarn to keep track of your place.

Rounds 2 and 3 begin with a modified puff stitch to avoid a gap.

Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch, not the beginning chain.

To change yarn color, pull new color through in second half of the double crochet.

Chain 2 counts as a double crochet in the first round of ribbing round (white), and as a back post double crochet in the remaining rounds, but does not count as a stitch in the foundation round of the cowl.

To increase/decrease the width of the cowl, add/subtract two stitches in the foundation. One puff stitch will increase/decrease by approximately half an inch.

Pattern:

In Tan, chain 2. FDC 99. Join. (100 DC)

R2: Chain 1. Insert hook into the next stitch, yo and pull through, (yo, insert hook into the same stitch, yo and pull through) 2x [6 loops on hook]. Yo and pull through all 6 loops. Chain 1. Skip the next chain 1 space, (Puff Stitch into the next stitch, skip the next chain 1 space) 49x. Do not join. (50 Puff Stitches)

R3: Insert hook into the next stitch, yo and pull through, (yo, insert hook into the same stitch, yo and pull through) 2x [6 loops on hook]. Yo and pull through all 6 loops. Chain 1. Skip the next chain 1 space, (Puff Stitch into the next stitch, skip the next chain 1 space) 49x. Do not join. (50 Puff Stitches)

R4 – 19: (Puff Stitch into the next stitch, skip the next chain 1 space) 49x. Do not join. (50 Puff Stitches)

R20: (Puff Stitch into the next stitch, skip the next chain 1 space) 49x. Join with White. (50 Puff Stitches)

R21: In White, chain 2. DC into the 2nd stitch, and into each DC and chain 1 space around. Join. (100 DC)

R22 – 24: Chain 2. Fpdc around the next DC, (bpdc around the next DC, fpdc around the next DC) 49x. Join, and Fasten Off. (100 DC)

That’s really pretty and I love that it’s a 1 skein project too. I am imagine it in 2 ombre shades, like a pale and mid blue or even something vibrant like pink and orange (pink and orange is one of my favourite colour combos!)

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
