How to DIY a Fairy Garden with Coleuses and a Water Fountain.

Last month, our theme was “Easter/Spring Front Door Decor”, and I shared Ana’s Garden Wreath, a free crochet pattern inspired by a garden hose wreath.
This month’s theme is a cross between Mother’s Day Floral Arrangement meets Memorial Day.

Our inspiration comes from Leo and Jane of Cottage at the Crossroads, and it’s their Topsy Turvy Galvanized Buckets.
The Challenge
The purpose of the challenge is to inspire us to take elements from the inspiration, and use them in our own unique way.
The Pieces That Inspired Me:
- Gray/Galvanized Coloring
- Multiple Pots
- Beautiful flowers!
- Dragonfly as a Friendly Critter
Gray/Galvanized Coloring:

I’ve had this fountain piece for about 7 years now. It belonged to a larger fountain that my mom had. The bottom piece has broke, but my mom held onto this top piece. When we sold our home, she asked me if I wanted it.
I always knew it was destined to be the star in a fairy garden – it just took some time to get there, but the coloring of it fits this perfectly.
I bought the large pot that compliments this fountain at Ross.
Multiple Pots:

There is, of course, the main pot to house the entire garden, but my fountain needed an additional pot to allow it to be high enough to hide amongst the Coleuses.
Flowers:

My mom bought me these Coleus flowers earlier this year, and they’ve been sitting in the same small container they came in. I knew they’d be the perfect flower to use in this garden!
Friendly Critter:

I found this adorable little frog at Dollar Tree. He has hooks on the top so he can hang from your pot.

Fairy Garden Tutorial:

I filled my large pot up with lots of dirt, but I stopped filling close to the top. I wanted my smaller pot to sit securely on top of the soil without tipping over.

Once I was satisfied with the smaller pot, I removed it, and planted my Coleuses in the remaining space.

Before doing anything with this smaller pot – make sure to poke/drill holes into it! It probably has the little tabs on the bottom waiting to be poked out. If you don’t make the holes, it will retain water, and it will smell, and you could develop mold – no good.
Since my smaller pot wouldn’t be housing any plants, I didn’t want to pack it all with dirt. I put a little bit in there to weigh it down, then I cut two blocks of floral foam I found at Dollar Tree in half, and placed them on top of the dirt…

…then I filled the rest up to the top with dirt for my fountain to securely sit on.

I moved my pot in place, then I hung my adorable little frog. You want to be careful in moving something like this because in this case, the fountain is only sitting on this dirt and pot, and in moving, it could sit tip over/fall off. I moved it in place first, the put my fountain on top for safe measure.

At the very top of my fountain, there is a small pot that I thought this cactus would fit into perfectly. I found it at Home Depot.

Under that is also a small pot held by one of the angels where I thought this tiny little succulent would be right at home. I also found this one at Home Depot.

And my fairy garden is complete!

Now, time to see our friends arrangements!

HI Alexandra, So pretty! I love that little frog too! Flowers fill our souls! ANd, that fountain is adorable! Cheers! laura
What a lovely fountain. I just adore the colors of the coleus you used.
I never would have thought to add floral foam as a filler. That’s genius! Your tiered pots turned out beautifully and the fountain on top is perfect! So unique. And with the added whimsy, it’s over the top adorable. Thanks for joining in. Pinned!
Alexandra, I love how you took you spin on the inspiration photo. Your fairy garden is so pretty. Love all the coloring.
Very cute. I love that you were able to repurpose the fountain. Adorable.
Love your sweet fairy garden, Alex!!! Your fountain of flowers turned out great! I think many of us had similar fairies back some years ago. Great upcycle idea! <3
Enjoy your garden,
Barb π
I love coleus; it’s an explosion of color and texture. Your statue is the perfect calming match for it. Great combo!
The plants are so pretty, and I’ve always loved garden statues (my bedroom used to be a ‘garden’ theme, of sorts). Glad you were inspired to create your garden. π
So many cute ideas in your fairy garden. Love the idea of repurposing the fountain and adding the cactus and succulent. Both are so adorable!
What a fun project, Alexandra! It looks darling.
How cute! Thanks so much for linking up with me at #AThemedLinkup 16 for Gardening, open April 30 to May 10. All entries shared if social media buttons are installed.

Thank you, Michelle!
What a great way to repurpose. I’m unable to create and think ‘out of the box’, but I love seeing what you come up with…..and it always works.
Pinterest and Instagram are a great inspiration to me sometimes.
Your fairy garden is super cute!!! My mom had tons of yard statues and she’d paint them as needed to make them last longer. I was able to keep her frogs and I repainted them to preserve them. In about the next year, they’ll be ready for another makeover.
Thank you! That’s so nice that you got them, and preserve them. My neighbor repaints hers. I don’t know if I have it in me to do, but really, this is my only statue. Frogs are so adorable too! Perfect Spring and Summer decor – so cheerful.
