Water Lily Motif – Crochet Pattern Review – Crochet World Magazine

April 13, 2020

This is a crochet pattern review on the Water Lily Motif from the Water Lily Doily by Joyce Geisler for the June 2020 issue of Crochet World Magazine.

This post contains affiliate links for Annie’s Catalog. If you make a purchase by clicking on them, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

On the cover of the Crochet World Magazine, June 2020 Issue, is a beautiful floral doily in blue, green and white. It’s such a pretty, serene design.

I don’t have much use for doilies, so I didn’t want to make the whole thing, but I did want to try a motif (or two). I love using motifs in different ways, though I haven’t decided on what I’ll be using these for.

A couple ideas shared by fellow makers:

  • Make a suncatcher by attaching to a hoop
  • Sew onto jeans, a cardigan, pillow cover, blanket, hat or purse
  • Attach a tassel, and use as a bookmark
  • Make more, and create a garland.

I am loving the suncatcher idea, and think I will be turning mine into those!

This pattern is perfect, and the motifs work up quickly. So many fun color combinations possible too!

Materials I Used:

  • Small Amount of Artiste brand #10 Crochet Cotton Thread
  • 2.35mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Water Lily Doily, Paid Pattern in Crochet World Magazine, June 2020 Issue

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives: Aunt Lydia’s #10 Crochet Cotton Thread.

If you aren’t making the doily (or if you want a different sized doily), you can easily change up the weight yarn paired with respective hook size.

The pattern calls for a smaller crochet hook, but my 2.35mm is ergonomic, not so tiny, and my choice for thread projects.

Time Spent:

About 30 minutes per motif – it really flies by though!

Measurements:

With motif laying with one center petal on top: 3.75″ Wide from tip of one petal across to another by 4.13″ Tall from tip of top center petal down to tip of bottom center petal.

Pattern Note:

The only thing I did differently in the making of my motifs is the transition to Rounds 4 and 5.

Because I did not follow the given color changes, which have you fastening off at the end of each round, and re-joining new color in the next petal, I just slip stitched over a few times to the new starting place, and then began following the pattern.

Easy peasy, and so fun!

What a great idea. No need to do the whole thing if you don’t want to.
I love the idea of turning them into suncatchers, I’ve been doing the same thing with doily designs this week myself!

Great minds think alike 😉 It’s on my list for this week to go pull my embroidery hoops out, and play around with it.

These are so pretty and I bet the color choices are endless. I’m not sure if these would work for it, but using as a coaster comes to mind.

I thought about coasters, but I think it may be too thin. I’m thinking about crocheting another solid layer, and sewing these to the top, and then I think it’d work great!

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
