Volume One Hand Towel – Free Crochet Pattern

March 27, 2021

Free crochet pattern how to crochet a textured hand towel that combines 6 stitch patterns.

For a few months now, I’ve wanted to make a sampler project. Last week, I finally grabbed some Lily Sugar n Cream Yarn out of my stash in my favorite Ecru colorway, and started on this Volume One Hand Towel.

What is Volume One? Well, I’ve published these three eBooks: Soap Cozy or Small Gift Bag Volume 1, Let’s Crochet Some Washcloths Volume 1 and Let’s Crochet Some Scarves Volume 1. Each of them feature the same 6 stitch patterns, and I thought it would be fun to combine all 6 of those in one design. This hand towel was the test run, and I have several other designs on my mind!

Typically, I design my hand towels to be around 15″ wide (the standard), but I wanted to work my design as close to the original stitch pattern that I’ve worked in my Octavia Scarf, Octavia Soap Cozy and Octavia Washcloth so this one measures 17″ wide. I’ll explain in the Pattern Notes section if you’d like one closer to the standard.

This delicious waffle is my Strawberry Honey Waffle.

Materials:

  • 453 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used Lily Sugar n Cream in Ecru
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Optional, Jewelry Pliers

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives: WeCrochet Dishie, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran, Rico Creative Cotton Aran.

Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle.

Time Spent:

This hand towel took me 5 hours.

Measurements:

17″ Wide by 26.5″ Tall

Gauge:

16 HDC by 11 Rows = 4.5″ Wide by 4 9/16″

Abbreviations – US Terms:

  • HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • TR – Treble/Triple Crochet (one extra initial yarn over, and one extra yarn over and pull through at the end)
  • DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • BPDC – Back Post Double Crochet
  • FPDC – Front Post Double Crochet

Pattern Notes:

There are several stitch multiples to make this design happen. You can adjust the width by adding or subtracting 6 stitches from the foundation, but the granny stitch/grace tinley pattern will be worked similarly to that below to work evenly, and the octavia stitch pattern will most likely also need to be adjusted – the formula will be (total stitches minus A stitches divided by 1 + A stitches, where A is the same number in this formula; also looks like this: Chain 1, turn. HDC into the 1st A stitches, (BPDC around the next stitch, HDC into the next A stitches).

As I mentioned before, this hand towel is 17″ wide, which is 2″ larger than my other hand towels. If you prefer something closer to 15″, you can begin with a chain 54, which equals 53 half double crochets, work the Grace Tinley stitch pattern similarly to below, and change the Octavia stitch pattern to “HDC into the 1st 2 stitches, (BPDC around the next post, HDC into the next 2 stitches)…”

None of the names given to the stitch patterns are official, except for Suzette – they are the names I’ve given my designs.

Beginning chain 1 does not count as a stitch, but beginning chain 2 does.

Regarding Post Stitches: the black lines indicate where the stitch loops are, and the white lines indicate where the posts are. In this pattern, we are working front post (and back post) double crochets. In this case, you will yarn over, insert your hook underneath the post, and complete the double crochet stitch as you normally would.

I want to make a less wide one, but I don’t understand the formula. What is A stitch?

A is whatever number of stitches you give it. Before that, I give the suggestion to add or subtract 6 stitches, and in the second paragraph, I give an example of a smaller width version.

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
